Hello Everyone

New member of this site. I find Linus his youtube videos very helpful so I hope to find some help here as well. I have a MSI GT72VR 6RE dominator pro with 8 GB of ram memory and from watching video's it seems it should be quite easily to add another 8 memory. Now this would be the first time I have ever changed anything to a computer so I want to be sure I'm doing it right. This is a link to my laptop for more information: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GT72VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro/Specification.

My first question is which unit should I buy. Now I know it says ddr4 but does the brand o matter, are there subsets in between ddr4 or is there something else I should look out for?

My second question is, Since I have 8 GB of ram, does that mean I need to buy another piece of 8 ram memory or is it okay if it's a different amount?

An honest thank you in advance to everyone for the help.

A warm welcome to tech tinkering, my friend. To answer your questions in order:

1. Buy the brand you like. The specific brand doesn't matter too much, it is the specs that matter.

2. You need to look out for the speed of your memory. (ie. DDR4-2400). The "2400" part stands for the speed of the memory in Megahertz or MHz. Try your best to match the speed to the memory you already have if you don't plan on replacing the other stick.

3. You should probably just get another 8GB stick of matching speed. 16GB is plenty for gaming nowadays. Unless you plan to do video editing, much more is unnecessary. If you want more, you would do better getting a new kit which means you replace both sticks instead of one.

^ that is a link to a reputable memory manufacturer's page of memory upgrades for your specific device. I'd recomend you get the Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM. (Click on the view more button.)

Hope this helps.
