Vertical GPU mounting Backwards.

Is there a way to mount the video card vertically but with the backplate facing outward? If it is possible, what would happen if I did. If mounted correctly the fans would be sitting really close to the case wall but if turned around facing towards the motherboard, would it not have more room for air to be drawn in? Plus being turned around should not make a difference in thermals since it is  drawing in the same air if you would mount it horizontally. So can it be done?

i dont see a problem with slight case modding

I am planning on getting a new case (either the H500M or the Enthoo 719) which both can mount vertically. I have also been trying my hand at making my own GPU RGB backplate but if I mount the GPU the way it is supposed to be then all the work is for nothing. This is why I am asking if it can be done.
