Hi everyone, this is my first post in this forum, so please excuse me if i do some things inccorrectly.

For this post I just followed the "Build Plan Thread Recommodations" post.

0. Background Info:

I bought my current PC from a friend about 5 years ago, when he built himself a new one. Since then I only swapped the graphics card (previously 2 GeForce GTX 670 in SLI) for a Gainward GTX 1080 GLH.

Here are the current specs:

  • Mainboard:      ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
  • CPU:               Intel i7 3770K
  • CPU Cooler:   Corsair H80 All-in-one CPU Cooler
  • GPU:              Gainward GTX 1080 GLH
  • RAM:              4x 4GB Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3 1600MHz
  • PSU:               be quiet Dark Power Pro 850W
  • Storage:          Various SSDs and one HDD

Now I decided to upgrade my PC, though I realised that would basically mean just building a new one and reusing parts like the PSU and GPU.

I have done some researched in the past few weeks, but to be honest I'm overwhelmend with all the things to consider (like matching RAM clock speed and CPU capability to use it, ect.)

I have also always been somewhat of an Intel fanboy, but now I'm not sure what to buy anymore.

1. Budget and Location

I'm from Germany, and prices here seem to be a bit higher than in the States. Now I plan on keeping the GPU (and whatever else I can), but apart from that I really want to future-proof this PC. Still I don't want to spend more than 1000€.

2. Aim

The System will be primarily used for gaming. Anything from Strategy (eg. CIV or StarCraft), RPGs (eg. TW3, Cyberpunk) or FPS (Borderlands 3, Rainbow 6).

I also do photo editing, some coding and desing 3D-Models for 3D-Printing, etc.

I don't stream or do anything like that.

3. Monitors

The PC is hooked up to two Monitors, my "main" 1440p 144Hz GSync Monitor and a standard 1080p 60Hz Monitor (I only play on one).

4. Why I'm Upgranding

I want to be able to run my games in glorious 1440p and 100+fps, and while my GPU never seems to reach it's limit (yet), the CPU is really struggling in newer games.

5. Additional Info/ questions

This is my first PC Build, so I don't know all the nuances yet.

I want to keep my harddrives, but add an M.2 SSD.

RGB would be nice, but ins't a priority.

What about RAM? Should i go for 16 or 32 GB?

Intel or AMD?

Would my old CPU Cooler be enough for whatever CPU you recommend?

for a gaming pc, 16 is plenty

yes, but since it's older you should contact corsair for new mounting hardware

left a lot of room for RGB and the like if that's important

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?
