So ive got a seagate barracuda and until the other day i thought it was a faulty cpu pump (which it was partially) but i unplugged my h115i and only part of my loud sound went. Turns out its my hard drive.

So this drive is only used for games, and its constantly spinning. Its the only drive in my system, and its usually at 0 unless i launch a game,

i heard it go quiet a few times (after a few hours) but i always thought it was the pump being weird.

Why is my hard drive spinning so much? Shouldn't it stop spinning when its not in use? How do i set it to be quiet quicker.

I can just hear it spinning now, like theres no reason for it to be spinning...

Thanks

1-) it is supposed spin, its a hard drive. Depends on its power saving features, most of the regular hdd's dont stop spinning unless they support power management features then windows (or third party apps) can turn it off to save power.

2-) Check if it supports APM  or Accoustic thingy using HDD sentinel, but from my experience you cant.

3-) Just because you are not reading/writing anything from that drive doesnt mean your OS is not using it or preparing it just in case you want to use it.

1 - yea but constantly? where can i find hard drive power saving features in windows 10?

2 - https://www.hdsentinel.com/ is that the right one? Looks sketchy wanna confirm.

3 - i doubt its that, its not accelerated or anything and windows doesnt take 10 hours to prepare it for a 10 minute session of a game that may or may not happen. I mean this aint a one off, this is constant for last how many months.

1-)yes, type "Edit Power Plan" to your start menu then go to "Change advanced power settings"

2-)yes, I have been using it for years. Its probably the best software to check and confirm your storage devices health (It has really good features, play around with it.)

3-)it could be R/W heads moving in out.

if i was to put 'turn off hard drive after 1 minute' would that do any damage to the hard drive? I mean it was set to 20 minutes for some reason.
