Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Z-axis problem

I recently bought a second hand Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick. When I was a kid, I loved playing space shooters like Starlancer and Freelancer, but never had the money for a Microsoft joystick. After buying it I took it apart and gave it a thorough rinse and repaired some of the buttons. Everything works fine, except for the Z-axis centering (that's the twist of your hand on the stick). It registers fine in-game, but the axis won't come back to center position. I have taken it apart multiple times now, but for the life of me, I can't work out why it won't center itself. The spring seems to be fine.

 

Can you guys help me out?
