So i just recently bought myself a GTX 1070 for 150 bucks which is a pretty good deal, but i have an issue thats been nagging at me since i first even bought this computer. right now i have a core i3 8100, 4 cores @ 3.6ghz, and now that ive put the 1070 in the system im kind of hesitating to crank my settings all the way up because im afraid my CPU wont be able to handle it. so the question is should i go full dingus and get something like the 8700, or be more modest and buy like a 9400f. i have an H370 chipset board by the by, so no overclocking. thanks for the help

Your i3 can do 60fps in AAA games just fine barring CPU heavy settings

For less than the 8700 you can get an R5 2600 + B450 board ~$80

sure AMD would be a good choice, but that would require building an entirely new system. im just looking to replace the CPU, not the entire thing. but if you say the i3 can hold its own, i can hold off for now then?

It's just a CPU/motherboard swap

If you can last until Ryzen 4000 sometime early next year that would be preferable.

this X470 board is just cheap for some reason.

Probably just wait until i7 8700s are down to under $200, if intel didn't artificially lock down your motherboard you could just drop in a 9900K, there is a chinese motherboard hack that would apparently let you do it though.

But really once the Ryzen 4000 series is out, it's going to be pretty hard to beat it's value depending on how long you end up waiting.

This why you never buy i3s or i5s.

Upgrading on Intel platforms is almlst always a monetary loss vs. having bought high end to begin with.

What board exactly do you have? If its VRM is weak, which is common for H370, it may not be able to hold 8700 boost clock for a long time, and it'll handicap it somewhat since it only supports 2666MHz DDR4.

If you want to save money, I'd look into QN8H or QN8G (i7-8700/8700K engineering samples) from eBay, Aliexpress, Taobao, etc. It's price is lower, but still higher than a Ryzen+motherboard?

MSI H370 Gaming Plus i believe, it looks like a descent board so it shouldnt mind me eventually dropping in an 8700, no? also a 750w power supply might help that (which i have from a deal i got on ebay)

we'll have to see on R 4000, but for the hidden content you asked underneath; i have about ~150 bucks depending on the size of the paycheck, and its in the US. I just have a basic 1080p 60hz monitor (you can see which exact one on my system specs on my profile...). and i run basic games and videos and stuff on my downtime, but when im working i use sony vegas, movie maker, OBS, etc., in conjunction with whatever i happen to be recording or editing. its not a main gig its just something i do for fun, but having a low quality stream with low fps numbers is starting to get quite annoying. and since i just upgraded the GPU and the problem persists, im calling not enough CPU horsepower. so an upgrade that i can do in like a half hour with little effort that i can get back up and running easily. thanks for reading the wall of text.

H370 doesn't need any hacks to run CoffeeLake-Refresh CPUs, the BIOS supporting everything up to and including i9-9900K/KF is already on their website.

You should be fine with an i3 8100 for now. Wait until the Ryzen 4000 series comes out to upgrade.

Well there you go, you can still throw a K chip into that board and it'll be a bit faster than the non K chip.

If you find out what components are in that VRM, and give it direct airflow it should be fine with a K chip, even if it can't overclock it's still going to be faster.

Intel really didn't have to screw people over by not releasing a 9700K with 6 cores 12 threads though. They just wanted to keep clearing 8700K stock.

Maybe just get a 8700K in any event if you find one cheap.

The i5 9400F is not a terrible value. It would make for a decent buy, unless you find something like an 8500 or 8600 on eBay, perhaps an 8700, though used prices really aren't so special

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Ya but that's only going from 4 cores to 6 cores without hyperthreading.

50% more cores is pretty significant, games like overwatch can leverage a full 6 cores and the clock speed is higher. I'd make the upgrade if it were me, provided the i3 is lacking.

It's not like the i3 is totally unusable though, it's easily worth waiting until you can get an 8700 or 8700K for all the extra threads. 8700s aren't much more than the i5.

It's only worthwhile if he can unload the 8100 and recoup some of the loss.

dont know what you mean by the first part, but where i am theres 9400f, and 8700s around 150-200 around easily. so that budget for just a CPU isnt completely insane.
