I just transcoded a 10GB 2 hour 720p file (h264+FLAC) into 750MB (h264+AAC) (its anime btw, and MKV for both files)

However, I'm worried about any quality loss. What settings should I use?

I was using 22 RF + 720p Fast preset + 256kbps AAC to get the 750MB.

Space is not really an issue, it's just that 5GB/hour of 720p seemed kinda insane to me, so I tried to transcode it. I'd be happy with 1-2GB/hour, and I can transcode overnight so speed is not really an issue.

If it works out well, I might just transcode all the large files to save space.

For better quality, I'm thinking 720p HQ Preset + 256kbps Stereo AAC (no surround sound)+ between 16 and 20 RF.

Is that good, and how long would that take? It took 30 minutes or so for the 2 hour file, and I'd like it to be less than 1 hour per hour of video.

I also used AMD VCE Hardware encoding, and does that detract from the quality?

Also why doesn't quicksync work, I have a quicksync compatible CPU?

Thanks!

Quicksync uses Intel graphics.  You'll likely have to enable it in BIOS and install the Intel Graphics driver.  Change your encode settings from 720p Fast to 720p HQ.  It will take much longer (maybe not with quicksync?) but you'll get a better encode.

Edit: I have an Intel CPU but have never used Quicksync because I don't have Intel graphics available. YMMV

I already plan on setting it to HQ. Any thoughts on RF level? or is avg kbps better as a setting

I believe using the HQ preset automatically sets it to like 19?  I just leave it at the default for the preset.

VCE has much worse quality than quicksync or nvenc.

Might aswell use h265 if your doing hardware accerlation

Why not compare the quality of the transcode to see for yourself? It really depends on the exact video used.

I don't want to use h265, as I'll be using the video on multiple platforms, so the bonus compatability with h264 is a plus.

I'll probably do CPU only, as that apprently has the highest quality.
