Pc not booting

Yesterday I had completely unplugged my pc for a basic cleaning, I plugged it back in and it hasn't been booting ever since. I've tried re connecting the CMOS battery, didn't work either. Also for about a month i had been facing an issue that when I'd press the start button it won't boot to bios but then I'd press the reset button and it'd boot, i suppose this got aggravated into the pc not booting at all.

Maybe there is a faulty wire in your start button circuit? Or the motherboard header of the power button has come off...

The button is working fine. All the LEDs light up and the fans turn on when I press the power button.

Try shorting the power button pins on the motherboard header, if it works you can assume that your power button on your case is defective!

remove all FP headers from the board and use a screwdriver to short the start pins, just to check that the fault is either wiring or motherboard. if the motherboard pins start it up ok, plug the FP pins back onto the header in the right positions and see if the problem persists. sounds more like you've got a position swapped somewhere to be honest but always good to make sure you haven't blown anything up

No I didn't disassemble my pc complete. I just disconnected the external wires, brushed it and plugged it right back in. Although i would try short starting it.

Do you have a motherboard speaker installed btw?

Also could be power supply issue, if for example the motherboard/gpu has an issue it could still power your fans/leds...

If by motherboard speaker you mean, speakers connected to the 3.5 mm jack on the Mobo then yes.

worth a try anyway.

there is a slight possibility that you've zapped something when brushing it, but to be honest, i've built every single machine of mine and cleaned them without static protection and i've never ever broken a component so i can't imagine it's that big of an issue anymore - in comparison i did zap something from the 80's at work so ?‍♂️

if you've got a mb speaker you can put on it, it may help. beep codes are a highly valuable and highly overlooked troubleshooting tool

I don't thik I have the beeper on my motherboard

Maybe you somehow made a mistake when plugging other wires in?

Hi there!

Its not so much in what you did that the people above are trying to tell you. They are trying to help you troubleshoot with a proces of elimination.

When i clean my system and i run into things like these. I take the entire system apart and assemble the system step by step testing each component in the process.

What i mean with that is this.

First i plug in the bare essentials. Power supply, Mainboard, 1 memory stick, cpu, cpu cooler. (if i have a cpu without IGP, i hook up a graphics card too).

If that works, ill add a 2nd memory stick. Add a hard drive. Add a second harddrive. Every time i connect something, i test if it still works.

One of the last things i will connect are the frontpanel connectors and buttons. This is also what the people above here are trying to tell you and help you with.

So back to basics, this is what i would suggest you do:

Rule 1: Always power the system on by shorting the connector on the mainboard with a screwdriver.

attempt 1:

Power supply

Mainboard

CPU

CPU Cooler (air cooler prefered)

1 memory stick

1 display (preferably via VGA cable, but DVI or HDMI should work too)

Attempt 2:

Add memory stick(s). and check with every stick added

Attempt 3:

Connect hard drive(s). and check with every drive added

Attempt 4:

Connect peripherals. Start with keyboard, then mouse, then other usb devices. One by One

Attempt 5:

Connect additional displays

Attempt 6:

Connect HDD led. check boot

Connect Power Led. check boot

Connect Reset switch. check boot

Connect power led: Check boot

Attempt 7:

You get the idea by now with other components ;)

Gamesystem: X3700, 32GB memory @3200mhz, GTX1080 Hybrid

Unraid system: Epyc 7352, 24/48, 96GB ECC buffered @2666mhz, 2x GT710, GTX1050Ti

I've tried both shorting and reconnecting the pins. Even by shorting it's doing the same thing it did with the power button. Could it be an issue with the CMOS battery?

Unlikely that a battery would prevent you from booting entirely, so I would try the steps above first...

That sucks.

Then it is one of the components in attempt 1 that is faulty.

Do you have a spare powersupply you could test with?

Has the situation changed by chance? as in, do you even get fan spin when trying to boot?

Yeah, motherboard and the fans light up but not booting into bios.

Could it be a gpu issue, that it boots but you just cant see it on your screen?

Yes. That seems to be the problem. But does it mean I've zapped my gpu? Because i did brush of some dust off it but i made sure that I didn't touch it at all.

Try using onboard graphics with a motherboard video output, can you do that?

Alright then its a GPU issue, or a video output issue (bent pin etc).

Turns out it was the GPU all this while. I unplugged the 6 pin connector extension and plugged it in directly. Seems that the extension was fried. It seems to be working fine now. Thanks.
