(Solved) Experiencing "No video input/No signal", pc just idle's. Can it be the 1070?

MultiGamerClub

UPDATED ON THE 10'TH NOVEMBER 2019: SOLVED, IT WAS A SLIGHTLY BROKEN DISPLAYPORT CABLE ALL ALONG.

Since i turned off the pc at 20'th October 5 in the morning.. After that time/day, it hasnt started properly and it keeps randomly shutting itself off on heavy load.

The cpu never really goes about 50c and ive stress-tested the gpu to a max 70c, the cpu have a Noctua U12S 120mm tower over the cpu.

Im not sure what causes this but im trying to figure that out.

I usually have a external 4 TB hdd in the front-usb aswell, all tho im not sure if it makes any difference, just listing it in okay.

I formated the pc on the 21'th October to see if it would help, but the blackouts still occur.

Could it be a faulty psu? Im probably using 450-550w~ so it should be enough.

Edit: Made the title more clear.

You're using maybe 300-350w max.

I would wager it's your PSU being triggered by your GPU.  If the voltage control module on the GPU is flaking, it can trigger the protections of the PSU and cause your issues.  I had that with mine, Gigabyte fixed my GPU for me and told me that was the problem.

Changed the psu in 2018 from an old Astec psu 850w to This FD Integra 750w.

The gpu has some coil-whine when i use more than 4-5 gb vram, not sure it has any connection with the blackouts.

Considering RMA'ing the graphics card to the retailer i buyed it from.

Sounds like a motherboard problem and not a GPU or PSU related problem. Could possibly be a ram issue, usually you'll see artifacts before it immediately shuts off. If you have another motherboard laying around or borrow one, could run some test. You're free to walk into a PC repair shut to test your motherboard, they usually do it for free. In the meantime, you can also test your ram sticks with memtest86. You'll just need to create a Bootable USB.

Also, can you describe your situation a bit more in detail.

Were you gaming before the PC shuts down?

Did the PC shut down while just surfing?

Were there any previous history of issues with any of your hardware?

Run some GPU Stress Test and CPU Stress Test to see what happens. Search Event Viewer for Windows 10 and look at the error log.

Dont have a spare motherboard, but i do know a repair-shop in town that can test on my current one. I do have a usb-stick laying around that can use memtest.

It shuts down regardless of what i do, but i usualy play games so it does shut down when im gaming. Ive been watching a movie and it shut off that time too so.. that sucked.

The 1070 has a coil-whine defect but other than that there isnt much problems, i changed the psu in 2018 as i experienced heavy coil-whine, changed psu made it 90% silent from the gpu.

Not sure what can be the issue, but when im heavy gaming on my back up R9 380 4 GB, it doesnt crash.

When it crashes, the pc doesnt shut off.. it just says "no signal / novideo input" on both monitors and the pc just idle's like its doing normally.. So its really weird.

If you changed GPU and the PC runs normally, then we have to suspect that the 1070 is the problem. If you haven't changed thermal paste on the 1070 yet, I would go ahead and do that first. When removing the cooler off the GPU, check to see if there's any burnt marks on the PCB and components.

If you have a DVI port, go ahead and use that instead of a HDMI. When it goes to no signal/no video input, we can confirm it is in-fact blank screen and not buggy drivers.

If you haven't already undervolt your card using MSI Afterburner, I would start doing that as well. Underclock your core and underclock your memory for the 1070 with MSI Afterburner and see how it runs. Make sure NOT to save the settings or load boot startup with Afterburner.

Download Z-CPU and search for update vbios for your 1070. Before flashing vbios on your 1070, make sure you understand the risk. There should be some sort of switch on your 1070 that allows you to change bios on the 1070 GPU. So before flashing a new bios, go ahead and use that switch and see how it runs.

---------

Just reading what you're saying... I am trying to understand the details here. Are you saying that when the GPU crashes, the PC actually does NOT shut down, but just idles while on the monitor there's a no video input?

Or does the entire PC crash along side with the GPU? (Have to be a little more clear here.)

If your GPU is crashing while the PC is still running, then by all means, it is a high probability that it's GPU related. So switching to DVI port will help determine if the GPU is in-fact crashing or just the display port not functioning correctly. Usually when the GPU crash, your entire PC crash with it. So I'm a little confused here.

It could be any number of things.

A quick thing to test though, pull out one of your sticks of memory use the machine see if it crashes if it does.

Put that stick back in and remove the other one see if it stops crashing.

if it crashes for both sticks thats probably your memory ruled out as being the issue.

You can also try this don't actually run the Restore just see if anything changed on the 20th of October.

type restore in the windows search and click "create a restore point".

Click on System Restore.

Then on the Next page you should see the dates, click Show more restore points see what happened around the 20th.

Did you update your Nvidia Drivers or something?

You could try picking a restore point before the 20th if you don't care what happened you just want it gone. that is provided the cause is a software based one.

You might at least see something

Change thermal paste? What? Are you crazy? The cpu paste was fairly easy but changing it on the graphics card? Do you know how hot that gets? (Probably yes but..)

Im too afraid to touch this graphics card, as its been the strongest shit ive had since i buyed it in early 2018. Also yeah, the pc just idle's like normal when both monitors just blackouts and says "no signal / no video input" :S

Currently im with msi support to possibly solve the issue, or else ill just rma it to the retailer.. all tho it didnt go as succecful when i tried it the last time with the same 1070.. Oh well.

This wont work as the moment i realised the pc was gonna fuck or just crash.. i just instantly made a re-install with mediacreationtool and ruled out windows as the problem..

Then your GPU isn't crashing. Literally, changing thermal paste on CPU is the same thing for GPU.

Also, you still haven't done anything I asked you to do. Are you running a DVI cable or not? If not, can you swap it please and get off the HDMI.

Just to note, please make sure it isn't your monitor that is just acting up and not your GPU.

Why would i be running a dvi cable? I run DP on Acer XB1 and HDMI on my Philips Monitor.

Both monitors went off at the same time when the "crash" happens, how would it be just one?

edit: To be exact: ACER Predator XB271H Abmiprzx & Philips 273E3LHSB

edit2: I see you want me to undervolt/underclock, i dont touch that being too afraid to make it make MORE noise when i last tried to oc any gpu.

Didnt see your DVI comment as i was scrolling trough it, i dont have a DVI-cable but i can probably get one.

edit3: I see that a neighbortown store have DVI to DVI, so ill drive today and get one cable. Hopefully 1,5m is long enough.

edit4: Trying to seek up how to undervolt the 1070, not really the easiest but i just dont want to kill it. Currently trying to reduce core.clock and core.vol

Don’t mess with voltage please. Under clock the core and memory. Leave voltage alone.

Is the 1070 under warranty still?

The return/RMA policy of norway is 5 years, atleast i know this on Graphics cards.

Core / Mem? Didnt you say undervolt it?

Edit: I get the underclocking, but with mem running at 2 GHz and the core.clock running at stock 1519 mhz, im not sure its going to help?

Ive underclocked the core with 100 mhz but it seems im only loosing performance.

Probably, underclocked it with 100 on memory and core anyway to see if it helps any. If only the store i bhought it in didnt have so shitty returns.. ill probably buy a used 1060 6 gb and use it in the meantime if i can get my hands on one. Im not going back to a shitty amd card.

GPU failures will cause PC to force a restart or force a shutdown. PC is just running idle while monitor display "no video input." That's not signs of GPU failure, could possibly be faulty ports or whatever cord your using or maybe just overlooked faulty monitor.

You'll need to run GPU Stress Tester to see if it is in-fact related to GPU under heavy load. So find a GPU Stress Tester and see what happens.

Part of underclocking your GPU, I wanted to know if your PC will perform normally when it's not underload. Also, getting that DVI cable will really help to determine if it's just bad video ports or just whatever cable you're running. DVI cable is essential anyways, should always have one laying around in times like this.

I stress tested the 1070 and the 5 941 score is the one which i underclocked both mem and core with 100, it didnt affect performance so much as i thought.. From going from 100 fps in beamng to 93 avg was so bad as i thought.

I can think of my Philips monitor kinda being faulty with the weird shit it has happened to it. The DVI is cabled up the the Philips monitor which used the HDMI.. Nothing against the HDMI but somehow i can have 75 hz on my philips monitor with dvi.. but not with hdmi.. what the f?

Anyway, ill continiue to play heavy-games and test what happens. Ive tortured the pc 3 times with different settings in 3DMark.. Praying its not my gpu. Considering just saying "f it" and contacting the retailer from hell and try.

Edit: Trying to figure out if its one of my other components in the pc, the ram sticks 2x8, the motherboard or the powersupple itself.

Edit2: The crashes dont happen when i have my R9 380 card inside, so there must be something wrong with my 1070 :(

Switch on the 1070?

I got a V330.rom file from the msi support, flashed the vbios with nvflash and now i hope its more stable. Version 242 i think.

Wasnt so hard as i thought.

The card is still underclocked with 100 mem and 100 core.clock so hopefully its more stable/less crashes.

Using both ramsticks to see if the issue is resolved. Or if the graphics card will hold like it did today, till 3 in the morning..

RIP, both monitors turned themself off with the classic response "No video input" from philips monitor and "No signal" on my xb1 acer monitor.

Still no idea what could be the issue, flashed vbios already and now im kinda unsure what i should do.

Maybe RMA'ing the card is the best option, jsut gotta find a replacement card in the mean time.. And i am not gonna use amd drivers again, im tired of that mess.

Cant even get into my original account, because the support doesnt answer.. And their remaking the entire online retail store.. So im stuck on no anwer from support for about 5 days now since i first shot an email to their support.

edit2: tdlr: Login page fucked, doesnt work for them. Sent them an email about it and ive been waiting for 2-3 days, going to assume their busy.

I see that my underclock doesnt stay permanent and i have to re-enable it every time i reboot/restart. Could this have something to do with my issue? Is it that my card cant take it as stock, but once i underclock it by 100mem/core its more stable? Im gonna try and make msi afterburner start automaticly on restart / when pc boots to make the underclock permanent.. As a temp fix if possible.
