Hey there. I live in upper Vancouver Island where the ISP choices are Telus and Shaw. My shaw provided wireless modem keeps crapping the bed lately and honestly I just want to return it and buy my own third party modem. Does shaw support third party modems?

I use shaw in Calgary with a 3rd party modem.

yes and no. most isp's have no issue with using your own equipment. But they will not provide any support with it. Get them or yourself to put there equipment in bridge mode then configure yours and away you go. I did one on there new xb6 or whatever there current one is, was easy to do.

all I had to configure was the dns server on the 3rfd party router. used google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. There is 1.1.1.1 and others

To add on to what @intertanwas saying. Support is different across ISPs. Comcast my ISP will provide firmware updates to customer owned modems. But the minute you have an issue they will blame your modem. You just have to understand that. Comcast also leaves the modem diagnostics pages accessible to customers. So it gives you an ability to troubleshoot.

The advice above is good advice. Bridge mode could work for you. This way you still have 100% supported modem and you can use any router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

We don’t as there are so many versions and models out there. Plus if they need to forward a port it is up to them as they usually forget there password.

You should check out Comcast’s supported device list. It’s extensive and they test and firmware update all of them. The only positive thing you can say about the company.

It's my modem's problem. I keep having huge latency spikes. Everything except for my phone is connected via ethernet.

I wonder if it’s a Puma 6 modem. Those have those type of issues. But for some stupid reason providers still use them.

You’re going to want to buy a Modem from their approved modem list. That way Shaw has experience with that specific device.

Do keep in mind that they don’t officially provide support for modems they don’t provide you.
