So because my brother does a lot of moving around and because of that I recommended a gaming laptop over building a PC like I have. The laptop is running really great and he's fairly happy with it, however the temps are getting rather hot at around 86-97C. The fans are also really loud and so I'm thinking of undervolting to try and bring both the needed fan speed to cool and temp of the CPU. I've done a little bit of overclocking but I've never done undervolting and would like some advice on what to do and what not to do when undervolting.

bunch of ways to reduce temps. you can re-paste it(costs money) or undervolt which is free.

basically, download intel XTU or throttlestop. do not install both.

i prefer xtu because its much more user friendly. there are lots of good videos online to do this

Try turning off turbo boost first.

One of the most common gaming laptop CPUs is the Core i7-8750H.  When you disable turbo boost on this CPU, it goes from 3900+ MHz to being locked to 2200 MHz.  That is a 45% drop.  Sure that will cool things down but the hit to performance is excessive.

Using Intel XTU or ThrottleStop to reduce voltage is what most people do with their hot running gaming laptops.  You can also use ThrottleStop to limit the maximum turbo multipliers without having to disable all of the turbo multipliers.

That is another recommended fix.  It is normal for gaming laptops to run right on the edge of thermal throttling.  Every little trick like this can help maximum performance.

If there undervolting in the first place I doubt performance is really a target for OP and its a lot easier to revers in case you do need the performance. But a even better idea is to just set a FPS cap in your drive or game

Rust fps caps itself XD its the main game he plays. I'll test out some ideas though I don't plan on repasting as I don't want to void the warranty. Made in like 2 years if he's still using it and warranty is up but not right now.
