Hello,

I've recently been running some stress tests on my PC, mainly the CPU, to see how it does under heavy load.

I am currently running the OCCT stress test on default settings (Large data set and rest on auto) and I am finding my CPU gets really hot.

I have it currently overclocked to 4.4GHz at a voltage of 1.344v. It occasionally drops to 1.328v under the stress test. It's been running for a while so far and I get the following max temps:

Package: 98c

Core 0: 98c

Core 1: 95c

Core 2: 98c

Core 3: 94c

I am also running my RAM at a speed of 2700MHz, if that matters (in terms of how hot the CPU gets).

This is based on an 29min test so far. It does not stay at these temps, that's just the max reported. It seems to hover around 80-90c, depending on how much the powers package reading (in W) rises. Usually hits the 85-90 region when the package hovers around 105-110W+.

My cooler is the Cryorig M9i. My case is the NZXT S340. I have two Arctic F12 fans at the front of the case acting as intake, with two NZXT fans on the top and back of the case. The current room temp is 26-27c.

I recently replaced the thermal paste on the CPU with Arctic MX-4. I ran the stress tests before and was getting similar max reported temps, so it seems like the reapplication didn't really help much. The previous paste used was the one supplied with my cooler (Cryorig CP15). It was 3 years old.

Are these expected temps for my cooler, cpu, case setup, room temp and the stress test running? Or should I be getting much lower temps from the OCCT test? Any other stress tests I should run to see if there's an issue with my cooling setup?

Unfortunately, I can't lower my voltages that much to run at 4.4GHz. I get lots of errors on OCCT if I push my voltages to around 1.3v (vdroop doesn't help either).

Just wondering if I've done something wrong, or if it's just a limitation of my cooler (it is a budget one after all).

It's your cooler, other than stock voltage and a mild overclock it's just not going to be able to dissipate enough heat to keep up. You don't want to go above 90c for a 24 hour overclock and that's still pretty high. So go back to stock clock and voltage asap. If you want to try a mild overclock go for it but turn vdroop/vdrop off first. Look into getting a better cooler if you really want to overclock.

This should help:

Ah, I see. Temps are fine under normal use (don't really go above 70c), it's just heavy stress tests like Prime95 and OCCT that really push it to the 80s and beyond. I mainly run those tests to check if my CPU is stable at a specific voltage. Otherwise, temps seem okay and get nowhere near threatening levels under normal use.

I was only concerned as I see people with coolers like the Hyper 212 Evo claim to get decent overclocks (4.4 or 4.5) at decent temps under stress tests. Some googling says that both coolers are very similar in performance.

I can't seem to stop the voltage drop though. I have an Asrock Z170 Extreme4 board and it has 5 LLC options: auto, level 1, 2, 3 and 4. I have it set to level 2 right now. I've tried level 1, but that just causes a slight increase in volts under heavy load. Level 3 causes voltage drop as well (seems more frequent). Not really sure what to do about that.

Any recommendations for an air cooler that would fit my case (NZXT S340), has an easy install and won't interfere with my RAM (Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB)? I am on the lookout for the best air cooler for my system.

Are you set on the idea of aiming for higher clocks? It seems like your temps are fine outside of synthetic loads and a slight bump up from 4.4ghz probably isn't going to make a world of difference.

Yes, I would like to try and see how high I can push my CPU. Settled for 4.4GHz only because I don't have a better cooler. Not sure on what air cooler to buy though as the bigger ones like Noctua have spacing problems with certain cases and RAM.

What ram are you using?

This is my RAM: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMK16GX4M2B3000C15-Vengeance-Performance-Desktop/dp/B0134EW7G8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=corsair+lpx+16gb&qid=1569093807&sr=8-3

Motherboard is the Asrock Z170 Extreme4 (if that matters).

LPX is standard profile so just about every cooler is designed to clear it. Just noticed it was mentioned earlier, my bad.

Where are you shopping / located? Budget?

I am located in the UK. I don't really have a preference for where I shop. Budget I've set as £100 - the lower, the better though (without sacrificing too much cooler performance).

Depending on how much you prefer to spend, good options include

Will the Noctua one be an easy fit for my case? I've heard that the NH-15 one can be a tight fit in the S340 case. I was eyeing one of the Noctua coolers, but some googling shows that they're not an easy fit in the S340 case. I'm guessing because the S model only has one fan instead of two, it fits fine?

There's no problem unless you think the cooler shouldn't be near the side panel for some reason.

The NH-D15 and NH-D15S heatsinks are the same height at 160mm which fits fine in the S340. The NH-D15 is just listed at a taller 165mm to accommodate for the front fan in the 'default' position with 32mm of clearance below it for ram. For some ram configurations or itx motherboards, this fan can be lowered and the cooler may be effectively 160mm tall.
