Currently looking around for upgrades on the cheap. Found what appears to be a good deal on my local Craigslist.

Intel i7 4790k

Asus z87 pro mobo

Corsair vengeance 1600 2x 8gb (16gb)

All for $300 obo. Been up for a min so price is negotiable. Would this be a good purchase or should I hold out for some newer tech.

Considering what my current system is anything would be an upgrade:

Intel i5 750

Nvidia msi 660 ti

Msi z77a gd65

Gskill ripjaws 2x 4gb (8gb)

Mostly used for hobby digital media (cad, 3ds max, photoshop, ect). Also game when I can, though the limits of my system have been reached and exceeded for either for a while now.

Let me know what you all think, or better alternatives.

You have a Z77? Get a xeon I guess, like E3 1270v2. I would rather buy ryzen for 300 rather than i7 4790k.

That's a terrible price for a 4790k, the Ryzen 2600 is going to perform about exactly the same in games and you could get all brand new hardware for about the same or less as shown above. If you could knock him down to ~$200 that would be more of a realistic price.

Unfortunately Intel K sku cpus go for an insane amount on ebay and that inflates the price so it's doubtful they'll come down on price. AM4/DDR4 at least has an upgrade path though

You're going to see a huge bump from upgrading that 660ti, if you're looking for the best used bang for your buck Polaris(RX570) and Maxwell(GTX970) gpus are really effective under $100.

Do you live near microcenter?

If the ad he's talking about is actually local to me which coincidentally there's the same exact setup for the same price posted but it's only been listed for about a week, the closest is like 1,000 miles away. It doesn't include a cooler either.

In that case I would get this combo:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.3937147

Plus a B450  mobo like this one:

https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813145083

Or any you like.

Comes to $268. Money better spent I think

That Gigabyte board is awful though. Buy cheap buy twice. I would be looking at an MSI B450 board like the Gaming Plus or Tomahawk etc. They cost a bit more but at least they can support a better cpu down the line.

All good suggestions. Bottom line is that for the same $300 op is willing to spend on cpu/mobo/ram, he can get brand new parts with slighty better performance sn upgrade path and warranties
