Greetings, I´m looking for a way to connect a HDMI 2.0 source to a portable display that only has a single USB-C port for inputs and nothing else (also no power connector). All I seem to be able to find are hubs and adapters that connect USB-C/TB3 to HDMI. The display connects to my laptop just fine via the USB-C/TB3 port, but then I can't charge the laptop at the same time. Also it doesn't work when connected to the USB-C port of my Crosshair VII Hero. So I´m searching for a more general solution based on using HDMI as the input.

For example, part of my home theater setup is a HDMI splitter that takes in a single HDMI cable, has its own dedicated 5V power supply, and outputs HDMI plus the split audio on several other ports (optical, etc). That's what (I think) I need, but with USB-C as the output.

I'm don't believe an adapter exists for this currently, USB-C is actually using Displayport for the video signal, HDMI to Displayport requires a powered active adapter to operate.

So something like this will convert the the HDMI to the needed Displayport signal:
https://www.amazon.com/SIIG-HDMI-DisplayPort-Converter-60Hz/dp/B07C39QBSF/ref=sr_1_9?crid=2B9BTW9I0KFSG&keywords=hdmi+2.0+to+displayport&qid=1566534350&s=electronics&sprefix=hdmi+2.0+to+displ%2Celectronics%2C187&sr=1-9

You'd then also need a Bi-directional DisplayPort to USB-C cable (most USB-C to Displayport cables are not Bi-directional and only operate from USB-C > Displayport)
https://www.moshi.com/en/product/usb-c-to-displayport-cable-5k/white

So at this point you have a specialty adapter and a specialty cable, coming in at around $200, and this still doesn't solve the power issue. It's possible this would work if the power was a seperate cable / adapter, but even then I'm not so sure the Display is using a straight Displayport signal or something that involves data transfer.

The reason the USB-C port on your Crosshair VII Hero doesn't work is because that motherboard isn't routing the iGPU of the processor to the USB-C port, it is only capable of data transfer.

I believe the USB-C ports on RTX GPUs would run that display as they support power, data, and video.

Thank you for the comprehensive answer! Pointed me in the right direction, although a full solution is not on the map yet.

HDMI to DP converters (either cable or dedicated adapter) can be had for quite cheap - I dont need the audio - but they all seem to be designed to go into a powered display rather than a USB-C powered one. A DP (female) to USB-C (male) adapter with external power could solve this, I think, but I`ve been unable to find one. They all just pass through the DP signal.

I´ll be testing this USB-C hub with the laptop:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B079NTPNS6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It provides 2 USB-C ports, one with power delivery. The non-pd port might just work to connect the display to ...

Damn, I only have a 1080ti and no good reason to upgrade to a 20 series card yet. Spending 1200€ just to get a USB-C port with display & power is not happening.

Said hub did not work, unfortunately. Neither of the 2 USB-C female connectors on it seem to provide a display signal. The display doesnt even turn on. Windows reports a failed USB device detection. When connecting the male connector of the hub to the display and connecting the PD enabled female port to the laptop the display backlight turns on, but egain no picture.

I´m quite baffled that this seems to be a use case the thousands of adapters and cables out there do not cover.
