I'm looking to build a raid server for the radio station i work for. we have a few cheap nas drives kicking about the place but we need to go fast as the radio from next year will only be playing wavs. therefore speed is an issue.

I've heard mixed opinions about raid 5 and 6. i#m looking gor a motherboard that supports raid 6 maybe, and i intend to fit it into a rack chasis with lots of cooling. obviously processor spead and graphics aren't a biggie but will be sticking lots of memory on it  (24GB DDR3) or above. any thoughts on where to start?

Thank you.

Personally, I would go with software-RAID, like e.g. Btrfs or ZFS. Mobo-RAID is shit.

what do you think of freenas?

I don't have much experience with it myself, other than playing around for a few minutes in a VM, but by-and-large I hear it's a very good NAS OS. Certainly a better option than using BIOS RAID and then cobbling together something on the software-side on top of that.
