Hey guys i was just looking for some opinions on laptops. I am looking at getting a laptop for university (won't be purchasing for quite a while) and will need a laptop with a decent battery life, 1080p screen, not too heavy etc. I was looking at the macbook pros and the 13inch retina caught my eye but the 15inch looks nice as well (my girlfriend has the non retina and i don't think the display looks that good). Do you think it is worth the extra 900 bucks for the 15inch retina or will it be too heavy and a pain to carry around. I was also looking into the acer s7 (the one linus had) which looked pretty good. Basically just want to gather some opinions and recommendations to get me looking in the right direction.

Thanks guys :)

Mac? Get out.

Kidding :P

I'd wait until you're closer to purchasing before really asking about them. Prices will be a great deal lower on current ones and there might be some really nice, new models out.

I'd go Samsung Series 9 or Asus Zenbook for Windows. The Acer ones are ok but I don't like the idea of a glass based lid.

You do realize the new zenbook also has a glass lid right?

I digress. I think it's silly how all these companies such as acer etc.. are bragging about having "durable" gorilla glass 3 on their lid. A 300$ walmart computer will have a more durable plastic lid. And we all know how durable that gorilla glass is on the iphones and android phones (which is to say it will break without exception when you drop it)

Yes. Now the regular 13 inch macbook pro (the only non-retina left) is a huge ripoff because it only costs 100$ less than the retina 13 and yet it doesn't have an SSD and still has a crappy tn panel that's only 1280x800. Not to mention that it's thicker and heavier. Not worth it at all.

i would love if someone who owns/ has had decent experience with an acer inspire s7 could post their opinions on it, that would be awesome ^_^

You do realize they make multiple kinds of Zenbook, of which there are some with metal lids right?

Or you could be a Microsoft Homeboy as Linus said and get a Surface Pro 2.

But go for the 13in retina. I personally prefer small and light laptops because I have a desktop or will have a "docking table" with a big monitor and regular keyboard and mouse.

I would go for the mbpr 13" in a split second if the bastards didn't make it impossible to upgrade virtually anything in the machine. you can't even change the battery out without removing glue among other things and you heavily risk destroying your computer by doing that type of stuff. Same with the ram... soldered... and the ssd... about the only upgradeable thing is the wireless card if I'm not mistaken.

well if you wan't that slim form factor, some of these sacrifices must be made.
