Just a quick question here, as of now I am using motherboard with Gigabyte H370N-WIFI with i5-8400 + G.SKILL Ripjaws V 2x8 2133MHZ CL 15-15-15-35 1.20V.

 

I am currently looking to upgrade my ram to 16GB whereas my 8 GB already selling it to a friend. The question now is on the motherboard + cpu max ram speed which is here:

Both said max ram speed for these setups are 2666 mhz. So from those sites, does that mean I can't go over 2666 mhz or I can and it will cause some issue?

 

Been reading from general websites saying some can while some can't. I need a proper verification as I would like to increase my ram to 16GB since its pretty cheap nowadays compare to few years back before the sudden ram shortages.

you can't. Over 2666 is considered an overclock, but memory overclock needs the board (not CPU) to support it which yours don't.

 

You can maybe run 2666MHz at even lower timings than usual if you buy say, a 3000MHz kit though

wait so i can? what you saying is i can run 3000 mhz if the CL are the same as my current ram?

 

i'm like 50/50 on understanding your 2nd statement, can you elaborate more on those?

3000mhz is just an example that you can use kits rated for more than 2666MHz on your board, it just maxes out at 2666MHz no matter what. The timings are free to adjust tho, and higher rated kits are often capable of doing better.

so meaning even if i buy 3000mhz, it will downclock itself to 2666 mhz, is that correct?

it could start up at a lower frequency and you may need to raise it up yourself.

hmmm....

 

my current ram is at 2400 mhz, it was 2133 mhz at first then i had to xmp it to reach 2400

 

so you saying if i buy 3000 mhz, and lets say it starts at 2400 mhz, can i xmp it till 3000 mhz or it will stop at 2666 mhz?
