Why is my performance so poor on an RTX 2080 TI?

Zemiox

Hi!

I built my pc yesterday, and as the title states, I feel like my PC is not getting the performance that it should be. Here are the specs:

  • RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio

  • i9-9900k

  • Corsair Vengeance 32 GB @ 3200Mhz

  • Kraken x72

  • Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero

  • Corsair RM850x

(It’s Joey Delgado’s PC build, here’s the link: https://youtu.be/8O2wYLJpwoo

I installed the GPU driver, and a couple of MOBO drivers. I also set my RAM to 3200 in the Bios settings.

Now, in the video he plays Rainbow Six Siege at 1440p and he averages between 220 - 280 fps on the ultra preset. However I am averaging between 170 - 230 fps at 1080p and around 160 - 210 fps on 1440p. I am also running minecraft at 200 fps, however after a quick google search a gtx 1080 and an i7-6800k runs Minecraft at 400fps. What the hell is going on??

Are you using the exact same settings used for the benchmarks you saw?

Also always make sure to set it to prefer maximum performance in Nvidia Control Panel, and unless you've got a really shitty cooler (you don't), download MSI Afterburner and slap those power and temp sliders to max so the GPU Boost can do its thing.

By enabling XMP? Setting memory frequency to 3200 without XMP will lead to bad timing figures.

Try doing a DDU "Display Driver Uninstaller" in safe mode if possible and clean and start then back up into normal mode now install the latest drivers and let us know.

Hi! Thanks for replying.

I used the same settings in both Minecraft and Rainbow Six Siege. The YouTuber only OC'd his CPU to 4.2Ghz. Also fyi: I use 2 PCIe cables to power my GPU, maybe that's the problem? I set in Windows 10 my settings to high performance mode.

^^^ Also a good point. If you want to properly compare your performance to someone else, compare FireStrike or TimeSpy scores. They don't always reflect in-game performance, but are good to see if you're on par with other similar spec rigs. Games are too variable, purpose made benchmarks run the exact same thing in the exact same environment with the exact same settings on every PC, meaning the only variable is your PC itself.

No (also sorry mods for double post). OP literally said the built this yesterday, it's a complete fresh install on fresh hardware on a fresh drive, drivers should be fine. If anything that's the last step you try, not the first. DDU isn't magic, it doesn't instantly fix everything, stop autocompleting your posts and recommending it any time someone mentions a GPU.

EDIT: Nice ninja edit on the second "DDU" post, Turtle ?

I apologize I take into consideration each persons situation.  I reply different depending on everything.  I know he did a fresh Windows install but that installs nVidia drivers very old ones.  So I mention DDU to actually try DDU.  I don't think I made a cardinal sin.  :0

Yes, I followed a tutorial and used XMP I. About the Minecraft benchmark, I know it isn't great but 200 fps compared to 400 is ridiculous

To quote the OP: "I installed the GPU driver"

So yes, though windows installs older drivers, the OP literally said they installed the proper ones. I doubt they'd manually download an older driver for a brand new rig.

Minecraft varies wildly based on world type, biome, and location, where you're looking and if it's rendering out chunks because of that, as well as what settings you're running.

I know, the fps definitely varies, but in the benchmark he never hits less than 300 and is running a 1080 (I linked the video) and I'm hovering around 160-180 on the same settings. Also how do you explain my bad performance in Rainbow Six Siege? Playing at the exact same settings (and maps) but still have around 60 fps less.

Anyways I will try and boost my GPU through MSI Afterburner and see if that works.

Anyways thank you all for the help!

Same Minecraft version?

Driver changes, different locations on the same map, a bunch of stuff. Unless you run exactly the same settings in game, in Nvidia Control panel, and manage to run the exact same gameplay, they're still not the same. Thus why I recommend actual benchmarks for comparing GPU performance relative to each other, they're repeatable and the same on every PC. Though a 60fps difference is pretty questionable, IDK if R6S has been updated since then or something, would look into that (and again, make sure you have the exact same settings in Nvidia Control Panel as well).

Alright, thank you. Also, I apparently have DCH Nvidia drivers instead of the normal ones. Does that have any impact?

Nvidia says they're the same drivers, just packaged and delivered differently. They reccomend using GeForce Experience to update them, I do as well. You need an account for it because Nvidia reasons, but you also get to use Shadowplay and that is excellent (still like it better than Relive because I can map the screenshot hotkey to printscreen instead of only a two button combo that makes it a pain to take quick snaps in game).

It is hard to gauge performance in random 3D game scenes. In a lot of games framerate depends on the direction of travel.

An example is Metro Exodus. At 1080p I can get a 100fps frame rate difference just by turning around.

When I want to see if my 2080 ti setup it doing its job i use TimeSpy and Firestrike to test.

Game benches are good as well since they use the same scene for everyone.
