Does anyone have any really cool home set ups like music streaming anywhere in your house, or an external hard drive you can access anywhere in the world, or a 3g laptop configuration, or a computer that controls your appliances in your house. I really just want to hear what people have done. :) If you have, i would be interested to hear about it and how you did it. This topic was inspired after the news about steam's new streaming.

I have a plex media server, so I can stream content anywhere in my house from my computer. Technically, I stream to anywhere with internet, but my upload isn't good enough.

I have this: http://imgur.com/a/lvLL6

I also have three servers (1 NAS, and two Virtual Servers). These host anything from game servers to media servers to torrent servers and much more.

Main rig specs are in my signature. Server specs are as follows:

1 Xeon E3 CPU each

32gb of RAM each

And this is all topped off with my new Google Fiber internet connection. I stream my media from anywhere, my torrent server also automatically downloads stuff it knows i like.

I just got some 10Gbe NICs to connect my boxes together. It costs more than old IB hardware but it was *so* much less hassle to get working. Driver is in the kernel and performance is pretty much as expected out of the box:

$ iperf -c fs2------------------------------------------------------------Client connecting to fs2, TCP port 5001TCP window size: 94.7 KByte (default)------------------------------------------------------------[  3] local 192.168.127.30 port 48312 connected with 192.168.127.31 port 5001[ ID] Interval       Transfer     Bandwidth[  3]  0.0-10.0 sec  11.1 GBytes  9.58 Gbits/sec$ iperf -c fs2------------------------------------------------------------Client connecting to fs2, TCP port 5001TCP window size: 94.7 KByte (default)------------------------------------------------------------[  3] local 192.168.127.30 port 48311 connected with 192.168.127.31 port 5001[ ID] Interval       Transfer     Bandwidth[  3]  0.0-10.0 sec  11.1 GBytes  9.56 Gbits/sec

Three things, there are more but these are the ones that have had the most impact.

- A NAS, it's nothing special but it made things so much easier. No more sneaker-net when wanting to put media on the TV

- Ethernet to PCs and TVs. Mostly because now I barely think about how fast it is. It just works.

- Sonos. Only two Play1s so not that over the top but having music playing in-sync through the house is some kind of magic

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing
