So rn I'm running a 1080 strix, Ryzen 1700x, 24GB of 2133 ram, and an 850W PSU. I'm looking to upgrade my CPU to either an 8700k, 9700k, or MAYBE a 9900k. My main focus is on gaming with a bit of streaming. As long as I'm averaging above 144 fps that's all I'm really worried about. My main question is do you think the 8700k will be able to handle streaming Triple A games like the new cod, R6 Siege, and Halo MCC (when it comes out) while maintaining 144 fps?

Why not just get a 3700X and get some fast RAM? That way you can use your existing board and sell your existing CPU/RAM to make the upgrade very efficient.

The 8700K/9700K are both inferior to a 3700X in most cases and the 9900K is a space heater that needs an expensive board and cooler.

What about getting higher speed ram and not changing the cpu?

9700k is just better 8700k and is usually around the same price, but why not 3'rd gen ryzen?

Exactly - 3200MHz RAM and a 3700X is far more logical for gaming when he already has an AM4 board

So getting some new ram and the 3700x isnt going to be THAT much cheaper. Cheapest set of ram I can find is 70$ for 16gb. The CPU is also pretty much the same price, 3700x is like 10-30$ cheaper in most cases but thats not a big deal. Performance wise from the tests ive seen the 9700k edges out the 3700x in almost every case except workbench tasks which I wont be using it for. Closest thing to it is streaming, which even then the 9700k outperformed the 3700x, according to bitwit that is.

Bitwit's testing is far from thorough - look at GN or OC3D (Tiny Tom Logan) - anyhow

The only situation where the 9700K/9900K can actually perform better in games is 1080p with a 2080 Super or 2080 Ti

With your 1080, gaming will be identical on anything modern. Thing is, the 9700K will also require a 100-150$ Z390 board and the 9900K a 170-200$ Z390 board or so. With a 3700X you can reuse your current one and not have to worry about anything. Just enable PBO and let the CPU do its thing. Also fast RAM is important for both Intel and AMD - more so on Ryzen, but that's likely your biggest issue. 2133MHz is too low for modern CPUs and high refresh rates.

The 3700X is a massive jump from the 1700X - upwards of 20% better performance. The IPC on the Zen2 CPU is also higher so even tho it runs at 4.4-4.5GHz, it performs pretty similar to an Intel CPU at 4.9GHz. If you are going for max single-core speed, you need 5.1GHz on Intel or more - and that needs a bigger cooler and better board

Looking at GN now and same results as previously. 9700k is  still out performing it pretty much everywhere. Also I do agree my Ram def needs an upgrade but im focused on a CPU upgrade rn. 9900k is out of the question now but 9700k is still looking really good. Also here is the link for you that Ive been looking at -

Note - with a 2080 Ti at 1080p

And some games prefer Ryzen as evident by Linus

With your card - there will be no difference in games. Unless you are buying a 2080 Ti in a few months and feel that 200$ for a board and cooler is worth the 4-5% difference in some games, that's your call. For me, someone with an i7, the 9700K is a hard sell and the 9900K is an overpriced space heater. Take this from someone running an i7 - it's not worth the heat and security issues on Intel.

Hmm alright thanks for the help though, defiantly taking the 3700x into consideration.

Fast RAM first, though - that's your top priority, be it Intel or AMD - the 2133MHz RAM will hinder a 9700K/9900K too.

To be honest, it might improve your 1700X's results by enough to make the upgrade pointless as well. I really can't stress enough how important fast memory is in 2019

Alright. Ill grab some 3200mhz ram then. Thanks for the help m8. Appreciate it a lot.

No problem. Also get some decent timings if possible (don't break the bank though) - once you set up the RAM and set the correct speeds, see if you can tighten timings a bit. (I assume your board is good considering the rest of the build)

1 last question. Say I was going to get the 9700k, (which I'll wait on that until after ram at least then decide between the 3700x or 9700k), YOu think the MSI B360 is a good choice?

No way - Z390 for Intel 9700K/9900K. B360 is locked so you won't be able to OC or tune anything and also won't be able to use fast memory (only supported on Z series)

It's decent, should be fine for a 3700X (not 3900X though)

OK, https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-3200MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B0143UM4TC/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=3200MHz+ddr4&qid=1567793012&s=electronics&sr=1-3 is what im looking at for new ram. Dont think I should need more than 16gb RN.

Yep - that's solid. Then sell your old memory to recoup the cost

Also, update your BIOS - this is VERY important. BIOS updates on Ryzen improve things dramatically usually.

well, improvement is one thing but it's probably required in this case

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B
