Wifi Channel - DFS meaning

Thony

Hello guys nowhere on the google or youtube can I find the answer to my question:

Is it safe and good idea to use DFS channel for my 5Ghz wifi ? (looking for "yes because..." or "no because...", simple answer)

Only asking because I dont know when but at some point my crappy Virgin Media stock router started saying half the channels available are DFS. It didnt warn me about it last year when I was manually selecting the channels. I dont understand why it has to warn me so I am just little suspicious.

Thank you to those who can answer.

If it lists a channel as DFS, that means some other wireless system is making use of that channel, typically radar systems. I would avoid those channels.

This was not a case last year. All the good channels are DFS I am so dissapointed right now.. Thx for the simple answer.

Well to be clear, the channel isn't necessarily being used by those systems, DFS just means that those 5GHz channels can be used by those systems as well as WiFi. It's designated by whatever your government agency is regulating spectrum usage. You can read more here if you want https://wifinigel.blogspot.com/2018/05/the-5ghz-problem-for-wi-fi-networks-dfs.html

To my understanding is weather radar uses 5Ghz. So if there is a radar site nearby you might get interference. Your best bet is just test out different channels and see what works.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
