CPU/Server Compatibility

Go to solution Solved by Slayer3032,

I don't think W series workstation cpus have two QPI links, you'll need E/X series Xeons which support dual socket configurations. You'd be better off with a couple X5670's or X5675's. X5680/X5690's would work too of course but they're significantly more expensive and you'd likely be better off going with a newer platform which supports newer features such as AVX when spending that much.

I'd recommend these.

Good Afternoon and Happy Monday Pt. 2!

I just bought a server (refurbished) from ebay. I've tested it and it works.

I have decided to get MOAR CORES, but know f**k all about server parts.

This is what I bought: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R610-Server-2x-2-66GHz-E5640-8-Cores-24GB-PERC6i-2x-1TB/191545700823?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

This is what I would like to replace the cpu's with: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-W3670-SLBVE-6-Core-3-2GHz-LGA-1366-Processor-CPU-matching-pair/333274071144?hash=item4d98aec068%3Ag%3A%7ECEAAOSwwZtdNhEp&LH_BIN=1

I've looked through Intel's ARK Database and they show the same CPU socket, but I am curious before I buy them if there are any unseen compatibility issues I may not know about.

Thanks in advance!

^^^ Facts. X5670s are some of the best bang for the buck CPUs for the LGA1366 platform, X5675s are a bit faster (usually around $30 each tho last I checked, I got my X5670 for $14). X5690s are usually $60 each or $120 a pair, I'd only get those if you want the most baller LGA1366 dual CPU setup you can get since they're best in socket, other than that they're just not worth.
