Linux-Windows Boot + Software Request

Hello,

I have been trying to access a hard drive with Linux but it does something to my Windows 7 install which makes Windows 7 need recovery every single time Linux is used--even if the Windows drive wasn't connected during connection to Linux. Over five computers dual booting I have never encountered this problem. Only since I upgraded my parts.  This all started because I needed to wipe out SteamOS, because I thought it was doing something to my Windows drive (no GRUB menu or anything). I needed SteamOS wiped because I wanted to use the extra hard drive for space. However, installing Linux Mint over it in hopes of accessing the drive via Windows has turned out to be a fail. Now I would just like to be able to dual boot again, as I use Linux a lot. Then I can try to figure out how to wipe it clean for storing files later. lol

Is there something I am missing?

I am also looking for software that will wipe a hard drive clean. If the software allows booting from a disc to do it, I'll gladly use that too. As long as going into Windows/OS is not required. The later would be great if I cannot multiple boot on this system.

My motherboard is Z87-G55 and CPU is i5-4670k

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)
