I just built a threadripper system. My motherboard is an ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha with a 2950x Threadripper. My video card is an ASUS ROG Strix Gaming RTX 2080Ti. My ram is 32gb of Vengeance pro 3200MHz. My problem is after i updated the BIOS to version 2001 and even before i did that i could not boot into windows 7. The system would start to boot and i would see the flying windows as the system booted but then it will blue screen and reboot. Do i need to reinstall windows 7 on my solid state drive? Or maybe am i missing something? Please help.

Thank you

Mike

Is the Windows 7 installation from a different system?

Microsoft only "officially" supports the use of Windows 10 on Ryzen based systems.

That said, if you installed Windows 7 anyway, you need to enable CSM and other legacy support in BIOS.

Is that hard to find in the bios?

Yes it is

So you will need to put the OS drive back in the system it came from then do this:

Go to C:\Windows\System32\sysprep

Launch sysprep.exe

Then use those settings:

Radeonsettings.PNG.6c722f37b9add3a5a4e537ed06c5355c.png.1c61a39015e0f3674192a0566cc5d98d.png

Then click OK,wait for it to finish, then it will shut down the system automatically.

Now get the drive out of the old system and put it in the new one.

It should work now.

I took the old system out of the case and put the new system back in that case...maybe I can put the old system in a box and boot that way?

You can boot the old system without a case, what is the model of the old motherboard?

If this is the motherboard you have then you need to short the pins i marked to start the PC:

I am happy to help ;)

I have done this with many Windows 7 Machines,

The problem is that Windows 7 configure itself specifically for the CPU/Motherboard you install it on so on a different motherboard+CPU you get a bluescreen on boot.

What i said above will fix that problem.

So I just ran the sysprep and got a fatal error while trying to sysprep the machine. What dose that mean? Also can I do a fresh install of windows7 ultimate on my new threadripper machine?

The fatal error can be ignored,it happens almost everytime,

Connect the drive to the new computer and you are ready to go.

That didn’t work I blue screened.

Try sysprep again then,if that doesn't work then you need to install Windows again.

How do I find out if windows 7 ultimate will work with threadripper?

It will work, but you will need a Windows 7 installtion with the chipset drivers preloaded in it,because USB devices don't work without the chipset drivers on Windows 7 with Threadripper.

Also ASUS doesn't support Windows 7,and Windows 7 drivers at all,so you will have to install Windows 10 drivers on Windows 7.

So it sounds like I should put the hdd back in the old system and upgrade it to windows 10 and then everything should work?

This should work,

I see that you like Windows 7,with a different motherboard of a different company this would have been a lot easier,

For example Gigabyte provides Windows 7 drivers, but doesn't support Windows 7 officially.
