How to use 3200MHz RAM with a Ryzen 5 3600?

Hi all! I'm new here!

I was having all sorts of intermittent issues with my PC (games crashing, BSODs and such) and have no idea which component has been causing it...and pretty much used that as an excuse to upgrade.

Now, I'm running a Ryzen 5 3600 on a x570 Steel Legend motherboard. I also purchased a new set of Corsair 3200MHz memory, but from the BIOS, it seems to be running at 2133MHz. Applying XMP2.0 seems to fix this, but doing a Prime95 test, I get nothing but rounding errors. Like, literally all workers. That...shouldn't happen, right? Is this a "bad RAM" issue? Or is this expected when using XMP? In other words, what should my expectations be for having this RAM actually run at 3200MHz stably?

Also, if anyone knows of any good resources I could use/watch that pertain to my issue, just for me to educate myself, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

if you run the ram at 2133 do the errors go away? if so, it seems the ram may be deffective

My rig: r7 1700 @ 3.9/1.35v, 16gb ddr4 3200, assorted rando SSDs, hx 1050, vega 64 1650/1025

I'm running a Prime95 Blend right now at 2133MHz and I'm getting zero errors. I mean, it's only been about 30 minutes, but in comparison to running it at 3200MHz, where errors popped up instantly, this seems stable. Is that generally an indicator of defective RAM, or could something else be causing that? Timings, etc? (I haven't actually adjusted anything)

Is prime95 the only case where this happens? What about gaming?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I haven't tried gaming with it while XMP is on at 3200MHz, at least not yet. My thought was to try out Prime95 first and see what happens there, and then to try gaming if the results were good. Would you recommend just giving gaming a try and see if I run into any errors there?

not like anything could go wrong if you game just crashes

This is a common mistake, but did you put the RAM in slots A2 & B2?

First: wow, we really do have similar hardware. Down to the GPU and case. Definitely know who to go to if I'm having trouble!

Second: I almost certainly do NOT have them in A2 and B2. Wow. I had no idea this was a thing.

Yep!  I've read about errors like this happening if you have your RAM installed in A1 & B1.  Here is some of my case porn for you!

NICE! I'm not sure mine is quite as neat. Here's a comparison, with RAM in the wrong slots and all! Also, I'll update here after reseating the DIMMs.

Thanks! It is indeed the H500 (well, technically the "i" but it's all the same thing.) I love a clean white canvas to splash pink and cyan all over, haha.

I might just post there! Feel like I'm going to be part of this community for a while.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is solved. I reseated the DIMMs and I'm running a Blend test, and getting zero errors. I'll probably run this for a couple of hours, try out some gaming, and if I have no other issues, call it a day. Thanks so much for the help! If anything does come up, I'll probably be back.

Oh, good to know 3rd gen can boot with Ram in the wrong slots.

1st and second gen refused to boot in such a config most of the time

Run memtest to be sure memory isn't issue anymore

Good call. I ran memtest before doing anything else on the computer and got zero errors!

Aren't XMP profiles only for Intel systems?  Don't you need to manually enter the timings for AMD?
