Best CPU temp sensor probe to buy

I want to buy a CPU temperature sensor/probe for my new Crosshair VIII hero. But I can't find much info online, reviews, or even how-to's.

Can someone recommend something?

Gratuitous Comment: EVERY case should come with USB-C ports. It's time and past time. WELL past time.

I got no clue what you are talking about. If you are talking about replacing your motherboards temp sensor, I would suggest you to RMA your board instead.

No sir,

I'm looking for whatever sensor goes to the CPU from the hole in the back of the motherboard.

Higher end motherboards have a small hole in the bottom of the motherboard into which one many install a "k type thermocouple" per Gamers Nexus. I don't know what this means or what to buy.

Your cpu has an thermal sensor built into it. Why not use that? You can download hwmonitor to see CPU temps

I need something that is OS independent. In any event, if anyone knows what to buy I'd me most appreciative.

^^

this is what GN uses for showing temps in the socket.

Yes, the picture above is the K type thermocouple. You can also get multi meters that have that feature built in, mine has it. The infra red laser temp guns are handy to have too. Not going to help you much with a cpu though.

You also need a way to attach the probe to what you want to test so you get an accurate reading. Most of what GN does I think he makes custom stuff or modifies stuff to attach voltage, current and thermal probes.

Um I'm sorry. All I want is the probe that will connect to a port on the motherboard, or to a small, *discrete* external display. I'm not really looking for a separate hand-held tool.

Do you already have the tool? I am sure you can get replacement probes for them. But without something to read the probe it isn't going to do you any good. What are you going to hook it up to?

I think we are all a bit lost here. What exactly are you trying to do and what equipment are using to do it?

High-end mobo's don't have it. It's something Asus puts on there trash Strix boards so you can get a completely inaccurate  pointless temp reading of the cpu's substrate. Not the core.

That being said I f it was a "high-end" mobo it would of came with some probes.  You are going to want this if you want accurate measurements.

https://www.myflukestore.com/p1362/fluke_80bk-a.php

And a fluke that has a tempture reading ability.

Software is extremely inaccurate. So if you plan on useing a mobo's header and software just stick a wire in the hole and rename a random temp to probe because that's probably more accurate then reading a probe.

Issue is they are made for a probe. 100ohm 20kohm there's a ton of probes on the market and you need the right one.

There go. 10k 2 pin for the header on your board. I would not trust these temps by doing this. But that's what you want.

Thank you for the link. That's what I wanted to know and I appreciate your additional guidance as well. The Crosshair VIII hero is about as high-end as you can get. I just don't want a handheld device sitting on my case.
