Newer CoolerMaster CPU fan stalled and stutters (vid inside)

CreamyCornCob

About had a heart attack. It started doing this a couple of months ago of an on now its not spinning up, fan and mobo are maybe 6 months old.

It used to stop at random, sometimes when launching a program. Now when booting up, it just wont spin.

There is no fan intrusion or anything blocking or touching the fan, its clean and the fan spins freely.

A few days ago it did it again, so I flick/spun it in the right direction and then it started spinning on its own.

Now its just not starting up. So I have a small portable fan blowing on the cooler, cooler is room temp.

Can I please get some input on what in the hell is causing this?

TY very much.

Have you replaced the fan before and the new one isn't spinning either?

I replaced this fan from a working stock cpu fan. It's maybe 6 months old, bought new.

Maybe it could not be receiving enough power? Also, is the computing booting up fully or is the fan just doing that?

Its always had enough power. Yes, the PC fully boots up. The video is a few minutes after boot....

That's weird, I've had this same experience with an EK Vardar fan. Have you tried switching the headers of the fans? Also,it may be because sometimes if you set the speed of the fan too low it just does that if it's on DC power which was the problem I was having with my EK fan. Try setting the fan speed higher and or switching the fan header.

Havent tried changing headers. Beings this is an open air layout, I have 1 sys/fan header - 4 pin like the cpu.

Fan speed... No sure this BIOS has it, its  pretty basic, I'll need to look. (gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 R2).

If I power down, tap into the sys/fan header, I assume this is going to give a straight voltage (no fan curve), VS the cpu fan header? So the fan will be spinning at 100%?

Hm, That's a hard one to answer. Try the 4pin switcharoo and let's see what happens.

Just powered down, switched over to the sys/fan header.... same stutter. I have a hard time believing the fan's bad, CoolerMaster has quality fans and its only 5-6 months old.

Damn it....

Hey man, I'm sure it's not the Manufacturer. Don't be down either. Maybe there is a solution. My EK Vardar fan had coil noises after 2 months. It's just the luck of the draw. I'd recommend getting a cheap set of bequiet! fans from eBay. Those never go bad.

@CreamyCornCob I was giving an example that even though there are supposed high-quality fans, it's just a luck of the draw that determines if it'll last or be good as it's supposed to be. But maybe that'll work.

@CiuwasBut the fan was completely silent this whole time, no coil whine nothing.

Gonna try this and set the fan speed to 100% and see what goes.

Just a heads up, if that fan needs to be replaced I'd recommend this: https://www.ebay.com/p/Be-Quiet-Pure-Wings-2-120mm-Case-Fan-BL046/2254857765?iid=264253685140&_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170810093926%26meid%3D953ea4c6e9944f1f9258224449acfaec%26pid%3D100854%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26%26itm%3D264253685140%26pg%3D2349526&_trksid=p2349526.c100854.m4779

My Favorite brand of fans, even though I've only owned one of their fans and I've owned Cooler Master premium fans, MagLev Corsair fans, EK Vardars. Be quiet's Fans are unrivaled from my experience.

OK thanks for the heads up. So with both headers doing it, sounds more like the fan went bad.

Ran the fan controller and ramped it to 100%, no change. Manual flick or two, stutters away.

RPM shows 17 but its just stuttering....

@Ciuwas Do you agree with switching headers, ramping fan speed to 100% with no fix, that the fan is toast? I just assumed CoolerMaster has quality stuff (which I know they do) and their fans don't die in 5-6 months.

Guess its time to call Amazon / warranty.

I'd agree IMO. I've had many high-quality brands fail me due to just bad luck. It happens to all of us.

I'd try using the motherboard fan settings to set the fan to 100% rpm first since SpeedFan's settings aren't extremely straightforward.

If the cooler's under warranty, you can probably just contact Cooler Master for a fan replacement.

@WoodenMarker yeah I'll do the mobo fan settings next, ty. And your right the SpeedFans program settings seems wonky or not working at all because I tried turning the GPU fans to 100% and the fans sat idle (no load on it).

So today, the fan started working for 5 hours or so. Then just now, it stopped. I flicked it and its working. So so strange.

If its doing that, is the fan actually dead? I assumed it either works or it don't, no intermittent...

10 minutes passed, stopped. lol good grief. Mobo time...

Not completely dead but gone bad for sure if the header is set to 100% rpm.

Try contacting Cooler Master for a fan replacement.

As I said above, the BIOS is very weak for this Gigabyte 78LMT USB3 R2 board so theres no % change for the fan.

But there is the CPU smart fan control, which is enabled. Disabled says CPU fan will set at 100%. Disabled, saved and exited. On startup and now - no spin.

Time for a new fan ?

Thanks to everyone for the help on this. Cheers.
