Hey everyone, so I have this spare Dell Optiplex 7010 with Intel Core i5-3470, 4GB RAM and Intel GMA. When I bought the PC the display was fine, but I was using it with VGA cable. After switching to displayport and DP to HDMI adapter, every single time the Intel's Graphics Driver installed, this happens and it reboots itself, never able to boot into Windows again (unless Windows is smart enough to uninstall the said driver automatically). I was told it's a processor issue, but I need someone to shine some light here before I went out to get another processor.

I've tried the following options:

  • Running Windows 10 1903, 1809 and Windows 7 Pro that it came with
  • Using driver updates from Windows Update, Dell's website (specifically for this PC) as well as Intel's website

Thanks in advance.

that machine doesn't have an intel gpu with displayport or hdmi if it has vga

what are you plugging the monitor into

It has 2 display ports and 1 VGA. The monitor is plugged in with HDMI via a DP-HDMI adapter.

well thats quite an odd board then. never seen that.

you said the vga port was working still?

I should probably check the VGA port now too. It was working perfectly fine. DP never worked with drivers.

That looks like a GPU issue, but since the GPU is a part of the CPU I'd check the motherboard and RAM first.

I agree with @191x7

I would guess this is a Motherboard problem or ram problem and not a CPU problem. Simply because the VGA works and the display port doesn't work. I would guess the display port and VGA are both using different circuitry but the all end up going to the same GPU. So I would think that the DP port circuitry is broken, and I think that circuitry exists on the motherboard.

Honestly depending on how pricing works out, you may be better off just buying a cheap video card and not using the iGPU. That would definitely fix the problem.

That would "fix" the issue if it's not RAM related.

I had a talk to Dell specialist and without a doubt he said that its a processor issue.

But since I'm so done with this PC I might just put in a graphics card and call it a day.

But sourcing for a low-profile card can be difficult and sounds like either a GT 1030 or GT 730 might be the only solution. Other than that the PC works perfectly.

That did fix the issue i tried out with a regular GTX 1050 Ti with a PCI-e riser and it works fine. But I think the PSU can't handle the power as it automatically reboots when I launched a game.

Right now I just want the PC to work normally.

is the monitor you're using compatible with vga?

Yes. On VGA its fine but it crashes when using DisplayPort.

is there any reason you cant use the vga port?

Why use VGA when the displayport is there?

becuase your display port clearly isn't working and your vga port is

Update: tried the VGA port and it wasn’t working as well after installing graphics driver. Looks like the on-board video is screwed.

Alright it works now. Apparently there’s a bit of thermal paste in the CPU socket, my bad. So it’s fully recognised and stable now.
