PSU watt consumption

Hi all

 

Simple question: Is the PSU's watt consumption always the max watt consumption?

 

(I have a Corsair RM750)

If I just let my computer on for a day (just for mining), does always consume 750W?

Nah, that's the maximum throughput the PSU can achieve (potentially). The wattage varies on how much power is required at a given time by the system. At idle it could use around 100 - 200 watts (depending on the hardware). Then, under load it will use for power (watts).

My 290X and i5 3570k uses 395w from the wall at 100% load. 

Measured with a kil-a-watt meter. No overclock. So I agree with CoolBeans. He should be fine regardless.

Does the 482W means it consumes 482W/hour?

If it did draw 750w from the all 100% of the time while the computer only needing like 50wDC at idle, your PSU would essentially be wasting 700w as heat. Your computer's power consumption will varied depending on the usage of your computer, and it is not 100% constant. On idle, it likely well under 100w. During systematic loads of Prime95 and Furmark, you may see figures over 350w AC, while your typical load during a more realistic usage would be even lower than the figure than you see during Furmark and such.
