Why doesnt the Maximus xi hero work with m.2?

I have a 850 EVO M.2 SATA SSD and when I booted with it installed it said something about its not a PCIE m.2 Is there any way I can get it to work? I have files on it that I need.

use this slot. if it's already occupied, you'd need to temporarily move the stick over (unless it's also SATA, in which case, you'd need an adapter anyway.)

 

 

oh jesus, it shot me a fatal error for a dang SSD placement. smh thanks!

@VegetableStu Turns out my second m.2 port is dead.. Im just gonna get a m.2 to sata enclousure. thanks for the help though
