Getting old work computer - decent for gaming?

Hi,

 

My employer is giving away old work computers for dirt cheap (around $40) IMO, the specs don't look half bad...it's a 6th gen quad core i5 with 8 gb of RAM. I am curious if I add a decent video card if it would be a capable gaming PC for my wife. I was thinking maybe an RX 570 graphics card but I'm worried the MB may not have a power connector for the graphics card.

 

Specs:

 

HP ProDesk 600

i5 6500k

8 gb DDR(4 - I assume?) RAM

450gb HDD - will be securely wiped by IT

Intel integrated graphics

for $40 thats a steal, just take as many as you can and resell them lol. Adding an rx 570 or rx 580 will make that a respectable gaming rig

I think it would be pretty good, the rx 570 would be the deal but if you don't have a power connector or a crappy psu then try looking for like a 1650

I wish, man...unfortunately, we are only allowed to purchase one each. They have about 20 machines total and are going to donate the rest to local schools.

get all your co-workers who dont want it to buy one and buy it off them for 50 bucks

I also think the price is really a bargain. The only thing I would check is whether the motherboard is a proprietary design with proprietary connectors. This could be the only obstacle in case adding a decent graphics card requires changing the PSU.

.I could do that but so far I'm only the second person who sees this as a steal. Probably because nobody wants to see their 'work' PC when they're not at work...LOL

Worse comes to worse, I (think) a RX550 would work and wouldn't require a power connector. I think the most graphically intensive game my wife plays is Civ5 and Catan. Right now she's playing it on a 2014 Macbook Air with a 2nd gen dual core i5 @ 1.4ghz and Intel Iris graphics...They run but the laptop often overheats. This would be a huge upgrade.

Yep, I'd buy one if for nothing else to use as a NAS, but it would be a decent system,  and as said before a 570 would be more than ample for most games.

If it wasn't worth spending the money on a GPU, I'd consider that. I think in this case, having it sit to serve as a NAS would be a shame

don't get the 550, just get a new psu for $50 and a rx 580 for $180 on ebay and you'll have yourself a good rig
