A friend wanted an upgrade for a home computer (nothing very intense). The aim is to provide speed in everyday tasks and decent longevity.

Are there any improvements you guys would recommend?

Here's a list of the parts; (Great Improvement Moderate Price).

Bare in mind that we have slightly limited choice of components due to our location.

Thanks in advance :)

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?

Are you going to overlock? If so get the 4670k/3570k

Wanna hang out with me and people like @Theslsamg, @ Ssoele, @BENTHEREN, @Lanoi, @Whiskers, @_ASSASSIN_, @Looney, @WunderWuffle, and @nsyedhasan. Well.... Check out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/

Yeah, no overclocking :P

Sorry should have mentioned the budget is max 500.

In Ireland, the main retailer is Dabs.ie

In that case, you can fit one of these with that budget. http://www.dabs.ie/products/sandisk-128gb-ssd-sata-6gb-s-2-5--solid-state-drive-870X.html?q=ssd&src=16

Overall, it looks quite good for just a home PC. There's a lot of room for upgrades if he decides he wants to do something else with the build

EDIT: You may also be able to squeeze a CPU cooler in that budget. Maybe even a Hyper 212 EVO. It'll keep the CPU nice and cool http://www.dabs.ie/products/coolermaster-hyper-212-evo---4-heatpipe--tower-cpu-cooler-8K32.html?q=cpu%20cooler&src=16

EDIT2: Or an arctic cooler for slightly cheaper http://www.dabs.ie/products/arctic-cooling-freezer-13-cpu-cooler-7H0R.html?q=cpu%20cooler&src=16

At first i was thinking of going with an A10 6800k for 40 euro less. but the i5 seems to preform a good bit better. I also though of a fx8 8320.

I don't know much about how the two company's compare, especially with more mundane tasks.

Both are overkill.

You mentioned upgrading? What are the specs of the current system?
