True - though students should really start thinking about it in Grade 9 or 10, since you often need to make choices for your Grade 11 lineup that will affect what course you can take in Grade 12, which will in turn affect which College or University programs you're even eligible to apply for.

 

Of course, the entire thing is a chicken and the egg type problem. Most people have no idea what they want to do for the rest of their life by Grade 12, let alone Grade 9. Or they have some false/misleading romanticized view of some industry (Eg: thinking going into "Computers" will mean you get to build PC's all day, or that you can get a good job "play testing", etc).

To clarify, I'm NOT trying to shoot down your hopes and dreams:

 

You're 13 years old, and there are thousands of careers available to you. I wouldn't focus too heavily on trying to get a jump start on college. Do what you enjoy with hardware, but don't torture yourself with learning calculus or chemistry or something on your own (unless you enjoy it). Schools and classes exist for a reason.

 

Go hang out with your friends, play some games, enjoy being young. Don't be in a rush to grow up.

 

There's a good chance your career choice will change another 10+ times before you hit your senior year of high school. And even once you get into a college I doubt you will even be sure that what you are going for is what you want to do.

Of course, the entire thing is a chicken and the egg type problem. Most people have no idea what they want to do for the rest of their life by Grade 12, let alone Grade 9. 14 would typically be grade 9, though it depends on your birthday.

I see a lot of positive replies in here which is heart warming.  One thing that is definitely missing is that it is unlikely anyone in this chat can comprehend your current background, and more importantly the background you will undergo through your school system.  There are many roads to becoming an engineer, I'm sure you've figured that out by reading all of the replies.  One of the best things you can do for yourself and other people in your class who probably have the same sets of questions you do is to ask your teacher about an Engineering Outreach program.  New Jersey has access to nice Universities.  A lot of which will have students willing to commute to your school to have an outreach program of some sort.

 

One of the things I've noticed that students struggle with the most is not necessarily the mechanics, but simply comprehending the problem in front of them.  Many of us overcome this in different ways.  Some do it through experience, some do it through literature.  Seeking mentorship can be hard, I think I saw someone recommend hackathons in this thread.  You should definitely look up local hackathons or even encourage your current school to host them.  If you want to convince your parents to plan vacations around certain conventions.  There are a few conventions in the United States where Engineers from all around the world collect and want to pass on their knowledge and expertise to the next generation.  If you show up, they will certainly be able to help you on your path.  Also don't limit yourself to any singular type of Engineering yet.  Even in College, the first 2 years of an Engineering education are designed to be as general as possible so you can switch between them easily.

 

Also remember to have fun.  Work doesn't have to be boring.  Engineering is one of the most exciting fields, you should have fun with it!

First be curious, learn how the world works, especially the scientific fields through mathematics and physics.

At the same time start to learn the basics of direct current electricity and basic programming, an Arduino kit might be helpful. For programming you can have a look to Scratch to learn the main principles (variables, loops, condition, etc ...).

 

If you are curious enough, you will learn new things by yourself. Always ask why something works and don't be afraid to search on the internet.

 

As other said, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy what you are doing. I am a hardware engineer, and without the fun I get everyday my work would be boring.
