I am currently building a PC for my neighbour who is working on a geology project involving Lidar data. After checking the system requirements for the lidar module, I configured this build for him. According to the recommended specs, this should be plenty to run the program. I also went ahead and threw in a few things to help with resell value, as the PC will only be used for this project alone. He will have no need for it once he's finished. That being said, if anyone has experience using this software and can give some build advice on running it smoothly, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a bad idea, full systems don't sell as well as individual parts and the more you spend on it now the more money you won't be able to make back when you resell it.

I'd say definitely drop the liquid cooler. What are the recommended specs? What program will he be using?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

Can you be bit more specific about software? Like is he doing modelling data 3D or just using point clouds? Looking at system requirements, you should get R7 at least. Maybe better GPU too. Geological modelling kinda tasking to system. My previous work PC had Quatro and it was still bit laggy with larger point clouds.

Anyway, if this is purely to work, here are changed to be made:

  • Case. They won't need one with window. Go for classic and sleak office PC look. Maybe Fractal Design Core series or equivalent.
  • CPU. R7 or better.
  • Cooler. Air, AIO isn't needed and you get same performance for half price.
  • Wifi. Did they request this?
  • Mouse. Again, did they request this?
  • Speakers. Just why? Headphones are better if they need to listen music while working.

It would help to know the specific software. A general class of software does not really help.

In general though:

If the system will be running a fair load for many hours at a time consider a cpu cooler like the NH-U12S will do a nice job. If the load is not that heavy and/or of relatively short duration, the stock cooler is just fine.

Simplify the storage by using just one drive. If the software requirements suggest a benefit from fast storage, take advantage of the X570 motherboard and get a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive like the Corsair MP600. Otherwise go with something like a 1TB Intel 660p.

I'd suggest a non-windowed quiet case. Consider something like the Silverstone KL07 or Fractal-Design Define C.

Consider a motherboard with WiFi. The Asus TUF X570-Plus (WiFi) is more than enough for this application.

I'd suggest a Microsoft or Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. Perhaps a bluetooth set.

The system doesn't need anywhere near 650W. I'd suggest a CX450. It's not modular so there is no worry about losing cables and with a closed case aesthetics are not that important.

The monitor has speakers, there is no need for any others.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

OP did give the actual software in title...

Global Mapper with Lidar module

Of which system requirements can be found at https://www.bluemarblegeo.com/knowledgebase/global-mapper-20-1/System_Requirements.htm the Lidar module is called Pixels-to-Points.

I don't have personal expierience from that software. My geological modelling experience is (and will be) from Surpac.
