It Depends, if you have a motherboard that supports ryzen 3000 and has good vrm and heatsinks go for the r5 3600. if you have a motherboard that doesnt support ryzen 3000 go for the r7 2700x. overall if you want a couple more cores and threads get the r7 2700x but its all up to you

Sorry, more info should have been given.

I'm upgrading from an i5-4670K. So I don't have any AM4+ motherboard at this time.

I don't have an unlimited budget (hence the less expensive chips) so that's why I'm curious, in general, which would be the better chip for gaming with light streaming.

Go 3600.

Disregard the vrm. People are making something out of nothing. If you have a non trash budget b350 or b450+ board it will be just fine.  People have already ran 3900x's on b350's just fine. I would recommend a high-end x470 or a $200 ish x570. You will still get some pcie 4.0 support on some x470's.

The improvements over the 2xxx ryzens is pretty big. So definitely pick up the 3600 unless you can get a killer 2700x. And they are out there. I sold my 2700x with the stock unused cooler for $100 when I got my 3900x on the 7th.

I went with MSI B450 pro carbon ac....bought 2 of them last week for 3600x and 3700x.

The pro carbon and tomahawk should be similar VRM wise but pro carbon has more features

EDIT:

Oh and to answer your original question...Buy 3600 all the way. It is much improved

I'm thinking about getting the AMD R5-3600 and then I look and see that the AMD R7-2700X is basically the same price. So I'll ask the people here, which would be the better buy.

I'm only going to use it for gaming and maybe some occasional streaming of games.

simple first you need a updated bios on older boards for ryzen 3000 series and if that isn't a issue if you are primary gaming get the 3600 if you do work that uses blender or handbrake or something else that can easily use 8 cores go with the 2700X or even better get a 2700 and save even more cash.

But again if you are primary gaming get a 3600

Thanks bignaz! I've been looking at an X470 board or maybe the MSI Tomahawk B450 as options. Just gotta figure out what I want to get in the board I guess.

Take the B450 Tomahawk, one of the best bang for buck overclocking boards you can buy. Also has BIOS flashback for easy BIOS updates.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600  Heatsink: ID-Cooling Frostflow X GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 Mini 6GB RAM: KLEVV Bolt 3600Mhz (2x8GB) Mobo: ASUS B550-F ROG Strix (Wifi)  Case: Fractal Design Meshify C PSU: Deepcool DQ-M-V2L

Does it? I've been having a hard time finding boards that have that feature, it's like they don't advertise it.

Yes the tomahawk has flashback. I am running a 3600 on one now with the 1.9 bios. It works pretty well. The bios is a bit buggy though. On mine I can't seem to overclock the cpu or make any manual adjustment to the PBO. And I can't find any option in it to adjust the infinity fabric setting. And every now and then when you restart it it won't boot and you have to shut it off and turn it back on again. The infinity fabric thing isn't a big deal though because it automatically put it at the right setting when I enabled the memory profile.
