Hello, Linustechtips community,

I built my gaming computer 2 years ago and now I think I might have to upgrade my CPU. I am normally able to play most games (Battlefield 1, Fifa 18, Rainbow Six Siege, GTA V, Overwatch, etc.) with at least 60 fps but I want to start a youtube channel now. I need to be able to record gameplay and talk on discord at the same time while experiencing smooth gameplay. Every time I try recording, I experience freeze frames or latency between moving my mouse, and the cursor moving, for example.

These are my specs:

CPU: Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7500 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
GPU: RX 480

Ram: 8gb

Motherboard: Asus prime B250-Plus

My brother recommended for me to get an i7 9700 or i7 8700 processor. I think my CPU is the main problem in my setup because I always experience lower framerates in CPU intensive games such as Battlefield 1 or GTA V.

Thanks for helping in advance!

Your system has a few issues for gaming and recording or streaming.

only 4 cores

only 1 ram stick

RX 480

If you are going to upgrade and build a new system then look at AMDs new 3000 series chips.  If you stay intel then a 9900K is the best out there gor gaming.  A new motherboard (required), another ram stick and a faster GPU would complete the system.

To upgrade this much would be really expensive. I'm just looking to slowly upgrade over time.

The problem is your back on a B250 motherboard. The best CPU you can run is a 7700/7700K.  That would help a lot, but would still keep you back on the old B250.

So what you are saying is that my motherboard is a bit outdated and not compatible with most new CPUs? And do you think the i7 7700 would be worth upgrading?

Exactly.  Yeah the 7700 is 2X as good as your current CPU (Basically).

That said, it's a dead end.  There wont ever be a faster CPU than the 7700 for that system.

A cheap b350/b450 ryzen board and a 1700/2700 might be a better option.
