so i want to upgrade the cpu on my current build , which is

Ryzen 5 1600 CPU

16 GB corsair vengeance 3000mhz ddr4

1070ti GPU

Gigabyte ab350m-ds2

500w PSU

but i am unsure if ryzen 3rd gen is a good idea considering the mboard is a budget b350 board, and while it has a bios update i have read elsewhere that gigabyte BIOS's are not great, and their VRMs are cheap too,

and i have seen some reviews mention VRM issues with Ryzen 3rd gen.

if ryzen 3rd gen is too much of a risk , would the 2600/2600x be best option or would the 2700x be worth it in this build.

main focus is gaming for the system.

on stock cloks is not a risk at all

the probl is overclocking it

vrms will work hot, so you will need good airflow inside the case so vrms when doing overclock dont get hot, work weird unstable and last less than they should, instead of years, months

on your case, ab350m-ds2 doesnt have any form of heatsink over vrm, it doesnt if it is good or bad, it means it will get hot and will need the airflow mentioned previously

i used a bad motherbpard on the same situatuons for years, i retired it, never died, worked well with the overclcokc i made in the cpu, my new motherbpard has heatsink on some vrms

after overclocking thos r3 2200 to 4ghz, my hand is hotter than those vrms, including the ones withput heatsink

my point is, you will be fine but remember that your motherboard is not meant for overclocking, much ?

so if i don't overclock the vrms shouldn't get that hot then. Correct?

also i am still on the gigabyte F4 bios and i need to get to F40 for ryzen 3rd gen and i need to be on F31 before that.

is it safe to go straight from F4 to F31 or should i work my up to F31 by going through the updates in between?

shouldnt get hot, no, remember that vrms start to fry at around 100 celsius, iirc, gamers nexus made a great video about it

my motherboard is on the same boat as yours, it says the same, havent tested it yet, i dont need new bios for at least 1 year, follow manufacturer advise, if it cant do it on one update, do two, is a annoyance but is not a long process, be sure to have a ups, to avoid bad surprises updating bios

iirc you go from f4 to f32, then latest version and thats it

Ryzen 3000 is safe to go for, the thing to actually look out for is power draw of the chips. You could probably get away with overclocking but not overvolting. If you do want to overvolt/overclock then you can get some cheap thermal pads and aluminum heatsinks on ebay or aliexpress and have a fan pointed at the VRM's. (The stock top-down coolers will also help the VRMs)

If you are unsure which bios revision to go to first, like F40 it should explicitly state that F31 is needed first and vice versa. However, if you are still weary and want to make sure then you could go for F20 or something then F31. Checking the over bios revisions for the updates that they made will also be helpful. It will usually state if the bios revision is meant to update support for future bios updates. (I just woke up, sorry if I'm rambling or not making much sense)

Until youre me, and use a heavily OC'd 1700 on a cheap B350 board with 2x2+3 vrm and no direct airflow and let the VRM's roast at 100-102c for 3.5 years.
Definitely not suggested but it will still last a while.

Ryzen hasn't even been around 2.5 years let alone 3.5.

@paulw10

Just a remark on VRM airflow:

Ryzen Wraith coolers actually provide pretty good ventilation to the VRM. If you'd be able to get a wraith prism or wraith MAX for cheap, that would also help in reducing VRM temperatures.

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )
