PC audio/mic - headset not functioning

I recently got a pc built and wanted to connect my headset (A10 Astro pc/xbox), i got a Long Y splitter (mic and sound) to connecting to the relevant color sockets (mobo MSI B450i, using windows home 10).  I am still unable to speak into the mic.  Appreciate if you can provide any pointers or steps on this matter.  Thanks in advance.
