Free airport Wi-Fi

I was at JFK international airport and there's this Wi-Fi named "_Free JFK WiFi", I connected to it through my laptop and it worked. However, I'm worried that it's not actually the airport's Wi-Fi but some random person's. Could I have gotten a virus? I have bitdefender.

Virus, highly unlikely... but chances are it was someone snooping and potentially stealing data.

Can they steal data if I'm using websites with https encryption? Also, are all network traffic like Windows updates encrypted with middle man attack resistance?
