Specs:

Desktop

Single Monitor

i7 6700k (not overclocked)

EVGA GTX 1070 FTW

16 gb RAM

250 gb SATA SSD

Uses:

Gaming (Siege, Division 2, Wildlands)

light CAD

medium programing

Currently playing games like division 2 or wildlands causes PC to dip into the 60s (FPS) under ultra settings (1080p) and big action. I only want to upgrade 1 item (either CPU or GPU) atm, was wondering what would make a bigger difference between the two? Note: my mobo is non overclockable and I don't plan on going down the route of overclocking atm.

Keep your 1070 my friend that is a beast of a card.  Wait until July 7th and upgrade to Zen 2 Ryzen 8 core or 12 core and the 1070 will be very thankful.  A non OCed 6700k is not that powerful ya know.

How would I go about figuring this out?

I think he is talking about which part of the map I believe or hes talking about which hardware is holding you back.

I mean... It's a very powerful chip... An i7 is an i7 if you overclock the thing.

Why is that? What MOBO are you using?

You've got an extremely overclockable chip that you've got a good investment in...

The only upgrade that makes sense from what you've got is either a 8/9700K-9900K or a high end offering from the upcoming Ryzen series (likely a 3700X, depending on what release reviews look like). You'll need a new MOBO either way, and if your RAM isn't dual channel at 3000-3200mhz, that will need updated for the Ryzen build.

So really... To upgrade the CPU you're looking at a minimum of $400ish for really... Pretty minimal gains in comparison to what the 6700K would accomplish if overclocked. (Any unlocked i7 from the 2600K on can pretty much all achieve about 5-5.1ghz at OC. 2nd Gen Intel is still alive and well.)

There's plenty of room to grow from the GTX 1070 FTW, though for 1080p gaming, it's a great card. It's approximately similar to a GTX 1660Ti these days, so really to see an improvement worth the money you're putting in, I wouldn't look at any less than a Vega 64 or RTX 2070. (So $550ish in upgrade costs there.)

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/PnPKHx/arctic-freezer-34-esports-duo-cpu-cooler-acfre00061a

The first listing is a very high end powerful and quiet air cooler that would guarantee favorable cooling results, and the second a midrange, but very capable unit for less than half the price. If your board had even mediocre VRM support, you could see what comes of that. I don't really see what you have to lose in checking out what your gear is capable of with $40 or even a $90 upgrade cost.

Because realistically there is no reason that the build you have there shouldn't be pulling 80+ FPS on AAA titles at 1080p. An RX 580 and a Ryzen 5 2600 can in most cases, including Ultra settings Division 2.... And that's a significant step down in gear.

Yes trebOt your right a i7 is a i7 but you said what I said sorta... That CPU not overclocked is sad.  It is meant to overclock.  Hey trevbOt what kind of OC can he get with the 6700k ?  Lets help him OC the mofu.  You can get 4.6Ghz with his chip since its 4 core .....  Am I correct there trevbOt ?  Or can he go even higher.  But we don't know what cooling solution he has, as we don't want to fry his chip.

I mean... No. You were hocking new Ryzen at a guy with fully competent gear :P

Every chip is different. One 6700K may not hit the same frequencies another does, but with a decent VRM board and a decent cooler, OP could likely hit 5ghz on it, if not push to 5.1

A decent cooler is a MUCH less expensive investment. And even if OP hated the results, and wanted a new CPU anyway... He could likely return the cooler or just have a nice cooling unit for his new setup.

A $40 eSports Duo is a pretty great piece either way.
