Windows 10 Update Assistant - Some Problem?

Go to solution Solved by homeap5,

So C2dan88 has right - you should try other method to upgrade. If you download ISO, for example, and unpack it to some folder like c:\win1903 and run setup.exe, your system will be upgraded the same. And this installer will not delete any files. I upgraded 6 computers this method so far without any problem.

Hi guys, I'm currently running windows 10 version 1709, due to some problem with my windows update, i have downloaded windows 10 update assistant to upgrade to the latest version of windows 10 1903.

Everything was working fine, downloaded successfully, but when it asked me to restart my PC to finish installing, it goes to 12% then it said: "undoing changes made to this computer" and it ended not installing the version 1903.

Anyways i have figured out the location of downloaded feature, just to make sure my files are not lost because of this problem.

Location is: C:\$GetCurrent\media.

Then i opened windows 10 update assistant again, to check the installation process again, then i found it downloading from the beginning, i checked again the files in the same location to find it get overridden by the new files i just started.

Now my files are got lost, there's no restore point to undo these steps.

I need quick help please, is there anyway to get back those lost files??? or i should go away and cry??

For upgrading Win 10. You can also use the Media Creation Tool for downloading/burning latest Win10 ISO to a USB Flashdrive (4GB+ capacity needed).

Because you are on such an old build of Win10 you maybe better off doing a clean install rather than upgrade.

That may be right, but I don't really get it - so you lost some personal files? Like photos, music etc? Or you lost files needed to upgrade?

Windows installer / update assistant should not do anything with your personal files, that was a problem with earlier version of 1809.

If you're talking about downloaded files needed for upgrade, then suggestion to change the way you upgrade is nothing wrong. Unpacked ISO is good for upgrade.

And a little offtopic - you attacked guy who wants to help and you asking for "quick help" (I assume that other people wants show help then?). Describe your problem better and you'll get better answer (and faster).

I didn't, I respect all people that will show help to me, but i also received an answer not related to my question, that makes me a little angry.

Well, lemme say it again: i didn't ask about another method to do windows upgrade, i was asking about some way to restore those files i lost.

Why are you guys going away from my main question?? if those files cannot be restored then just say this, without wasting my time and your time also.

Its no problem for me to download an ISO file again, but here in my country i have a very limited internet package of GIGABYTES, i don't wanna waste them for nothing, because Microsoft Windows doesn't have a way to restore some lost files, that's really ridiculous, and i'm in so need next days to do so many high downloads.

C:\$GetCurrent\media is more than likely a temporary place holder for storing the downloaded files.. During the upgrade process Windows is moving/decompressing those files elsewhere in C:\Windows. When the update assistant fails the install it mostly likely just deletes the files it has moved/decompressed and does not bother restoring them.

For this reason I suggested the Media Creation Tool. That way you have permanent download of the latest ISO.

OK here we go, i don't know how this happened but i have figured out another location that i think it belongs to the windows installation files before moving them to C:\$GetCurrent\media

Found a folder in one of my drives name: "Windows10Upgrade", and found those files in with their names:

- 18362.175.190612-0046.19h1_release_svc_refresh_CLIENTCONSUMER_RET_x64FRE_en-us.esd (3.22 GB)

- 18362.175.190612-0046.19h1_release_svc_refresh_CLIENTCONSUMER_RET_x64FRE_en-us.esd_ (3.22 GB)

- products

I think those are the downloaded files before decompression and moving.

Is there some way to extract the windows installation files from those files??

Upgrade assistant should detect downloaded files and use them without re-download. You can see downloading for few seconds and it skips from 0 to 100%.

OK, i actually did what you said, opened upgrade assistant again, and it really detected downloaded files, it make a verification quickly from 0% to 96% then it said "Downloading", i said its ok np just 4% and it will complete, but suddenly it started downloading from the beginning, the previously downloaded files at that location i said above was completely overridden by the new download, so i think i lost them forever.

Anyways i think the best option now is to download an ISO file and do a clean install, you were so right from the beginning, sorry about what happened, but its not your fault at all or not even mine, but that's really back to shitty Microsoft that doesn't have a good way to protect their files.

Thanks so much for your help, your time and everything, same thanks also for @C2dan88, all replies are really so appreciated.

Have a nice day :D :D

I never said that clean install is the best option. I said that you can UPGRADE your system using unpacked ISO. If you made clean install, you'll lost everything - installed programs, settings, files etc. So if everything works good - just run setup.exe inside Windows after you unpack ISO to some folder (create some in root directory, do not use existing user folders).
