raid1 Can i have one 250gb SSD and one 1TB HDD in RAID1?

Hi,

I wonder if it is possible to have one 250gb SSD and one 1TB HDD in RAID1? And if it is possible, is it recommended? Why/why not?

You can, but you'd be limited to 250 + 250 for whatever config you'd be doing, and I can't imagine if you striped it that it'd be faster than the SSD by itself since you'd have the HDD dragging it down with slower speeds and access times.

Do you mean RAID 0? RAID 1 clones the content of the smaller drive to the rest of the drives, no speed improvement. RAID 0 combines the capacities and speeds, which increases performance. There are 2 reasons why this isn't a good idea. 1. Each drive becomes the capacity of the smaller drive (EX: only 250gb of your 1tb hdd would be used in a RAID 0 with your 250gb SSD) 2. Mismatching drive speeds to this degree, just by the nature of how a RAID 0 works, would yield inconsistently bad performance, making it very impracticable. If you did actually mean a RAID 1, the previous points still apply, and it makes even less sense because the HDD has a much higher chance of dieing first than the SSD.
