Ok so my sister is going to be graduating college soon and my parents want me to find a new laptop for her, since her last laptop was bought about 4 years ago, as a graduation present.

Parents didn't really specify a price limit so I am going to limit it around $1000 USD.

What she mostly does with her current laptop is just general web browsing, watching videos, skyping, and the occasional web/flash game, but she will keep this new one until it basically breaks.

If I am missing information, just say it and I'll try and answer it.

Requirements

  • Backlit keyboard
  • Haswell CPU (i5 or i7)
  • 1080p screen (IPS would be nice)
  • Have some sort of SSD/SSHDD for quick startup/resume
  • 5+ hour battery life
  • relatively thin
  • Does not have to have a GPU
  • Decent speakers/webcam
  • Full size keyboard
  • Can't be a Mac

Uhm are you sure you want it to have a SSD. I can see her very quickly filling the SSD up because she doesn't realize where she is installing shit to. I can't tell you how many times I've had to deal with people doing this.

She is decent at not downloading random junk. But I did change the requirements so it can be a SSHDD also.

I would definitely wait for Intel Broadwell laptops soon if it's going to be used for the long term.

A time date for Broadwell laptops?

Later this year. Improvements include 40% faster iGPU and 30% less power consumption.

I have about until April...so I have Q1 of 2014.

Found this, looks like a great deal. Note: it's refurbished and doesn't have a SSD, though theres quite a lot money left for upgrades. :)

It has a great i7-4700MQ and 12 gigs of ram!

Can't see how long battery life it has, and it could have been thiner though. :(
