New PC Build

Hi everyone, I'm planning to get a new rig around year end.

 

I've been looking at an i5 9400f, rtx 2070, 512gb SSD for boot, 2 x 2TB  HDD's for storage, and basically make this My PC.

 

I was wondering, I'm looking to play modern games at 1440p/60fps on high/ultra on a 27ish inch 1440p monitor (probably 60hz?) with a 24" 1080p screen on the side for videos etc whilst gaming.

 

Would the 2070 be sufficient for this?

 

I'm genuinely unsure here, but would want to go for a bit of future planning vis a vis the GPU, instead of getting one that would Just suffice.

 

Any advice would be great!

There's going to be multiple new GPU and CPU launches by year end, it's WAY too early to plan.

You build date moves up to August?

 

If so, we'll have Ryzen and Navi coming out with new items still.  

 

But to answer your question, the 2070 (or quivalent) should be able to do 1440p/60 on high for you, yes.

It might. I'm not sure just yet, but am planning because I am a crazy planner :D. Also, I was just trying to gauge a performance point, cos the next iteration equivalent of the current 2070 hopefully won't be too big a jump in price, yknow? 

 

I've heard recently that nowadays gamers are moving towards AMD, cos they are cheaper and yet just as good for gaming as Intel. Any advice about that?

It depends on what your goal is.  At 1440p and 4K, a Ryzen is good due to reliance more on the GPU and you're not shooting for 144fps+.  At 1080p 144+ you mainly want a fast CPU as well to achieve those high frame rates.

 

Now the upcoming Ryzen chips are reputedly able to match Intel's current gen chips in clock speed, so they would be a good gaming CPU line.  If they pan out as advertised of course.  

 

When they can get 3rd party tested in a few weeks we'll know more.

As @jstudrawa mentioned.  Also if you are planning to build the best time to do it is around the black Friday sales. Additionally If you plan on building you should have a budget in mind, a parts list  set up that you can make changes to in case something goes on sale, and also have an idea on what you plan on doing with the computer now and in the next few years.  If you want an all around decent system and at a decent price your best bet is going with Ryzen at this point. But that being said I can tell you what chip to get just yet because the 3000 series has not hit the market. Also GPU wise the 2070 is good but there are other GPU's coming that may be cheaper or bring down costs of the 2070, 2080/ti.  So if your not planning on building this week its kinda hard to recommend items that will work for you.
