Usb devices not working after BSOD

Makonn

Hello

I ran into BSOD a couple of days ago and after that, none of my usb devices are not recognized.

Usb ports still give out power so I am thinking that the drivers are failing.

But now after i tried the mouse and keyboard on my Work computer, and the usb ports stopped working on that computer too im not so sure about anything anymore. Is this supposed to be a coincidence?

I have tried reseting bios with battery removal and short circuiting the pins on the motherboard with no help. Now im stuck in screen where im supposed to run bios setup by pressing F1.

How bad can the BSOD mess up my computer? Are the drivers failing, are the ports failing or did the BSOD mess up my devices to a state where they mess up every port they are attached to? Or is my mobo failing?

Im not sure what are the possible scenarios are in a situation like this.

Any ideas what might be the problem and how to solve the issue? My next step is to try PS2 keyboard / mouse and see what happens.

Im running Windows 10 on a ASUS Z170-A. those might be the components that matter.

If the same problem occurs after using the same keyboard and mouse I'm starting to think that either of those is at fault. It could be shorting an USB port and taking the controller with it.

And when resetting the BIOS, did you remove the power cord? If the mainboard was still getting power, chances are popping out the battery and/or shorting the pins might not have worked.

I tried another keyboard, first in my desktop with No luck and then in my Work computer where it didnt Work either.

The weird thing is that after trying none of the usb ports Work anymore. Even the ones that had nothing in them.

Yes, i did exactly ad you said. Also the fact that its forcing me to run bios setup encourages that it worked.

Sounds as though the controller itself is broken. It would explain none of the ports working anymore.

The only thing I can recommend at this time is to not use any of the USB devices you had plugged into the PC at the time of the BSOD, as they might be severely damaged, or the cause of the damage.

Get a really, really cheap PS/2 keyboard and try entering the BIOS with that. If that does work, you can start troubleshooting by freshly installing Windows using a DVD, and if at all possible, another harddisk (doesn't have to be fast, or large, it's just for testing purposes), and see what happens after installing the drivers, and testing the USB ports with another (again, as cheap as possible) USB keyboard.

Usbs in my Work dock dont work either when the laptop is attached. My Work computers device manager gave error 10 in ''usb 3.0 blaa blaa'' and after i uninstalled it and looked for changes the device manager gives error 10 for ''USB xHCI compliant host controller''. Nothing changes when updating or uninstalling that one.

IT support at my Work place told me that it might be a faulty mouse or keyboard which broke the controller.

Any suggestions how to proceed? Is there a way to know for sure if something is actually broken or if the controller can recover somehow? If somethings broken, is the only thing left to do to buy New keyboard, mouse and a mobo?

That definitely sounds like a broken controller.

That is entirely possible. Since the USB port issue also cropped on another PC to which they were attached they are the most likely culprits.

Yes. Repairing the mainboard will be more costly than replacing it, as it'll require specialist work.

Since Asus talks about 5x protection I'd start with contacting their customer support and ask whether or not this is something that is under warranty.
