I was wondering how many others have tried to dip their foot into the pool?

I started not long after Linus released their video on it so I started to dig in whole hog, and boy has it been an interesting ride. I've tried a few games now and it really is a hit or miss game, like this week my friend and I tried to pay Borderlands 2 this week, now i had previously played it and it seemed to work perfectly on linux using the steam launcher, however when we tried to play together we got version mismatch errors. when i switched back to windows all my old characters loaded off steam cloud and we were able to play together.

Other programs which are not technically supposed to work on proton work surprisingly well, for example i bought YNAB (why you need a budget) on steam, and using proton i had no problem running it (other than dropbox not working properly)

what has your experience been?

Linux support is becoming more common with games but it's still not there yet, a majority of titles are still Windows based and most AAA titles are only going to be released for Windows, I first tried gaming on Linux but ultimately switched to Windows because a good 90% of the games I wanted to play didn't work on linux. If you're fine with only being able to play certain games and having multiplayer/version issues when trying to play with friends then go for it. You can try Windows and if you don't like it switch back, but Windows is definitely the better OS for gaming.

Unless you're doing it as a fun little project, I don't see why anyone would bother going through all that hassle (and still not being able to play a bunch of games), when Windows 10 is literally free or can be bought for $5 on ebay?

Ryzen 1600x @4GHz

Asus GTX 1070 8GB @1900MHz

16 GB HyperX DDR4 @3000MHz

Asus Prime X370 Pro

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

Noctua NH-U14S

Seasonic M12II 620W

+ four different mechanical drives.

mostly it has to do with having to fix computers with win 10 on them all day, i get home and have flashbacks while trying to play games, i mean windows is good, but it's still not a seamless experience playing games on it, i mean, there are only  so many times i can sit through an update while i am trying to play games.

Linux for all its peculiarities and short falls will at least keep working once you got it working, and most of the time updates aren't going to break what is already there.

And honestly I've kind fallen out of love with windows, I actually switched to Linux as my daily driver OS about 6 months ago and so far the only time  i really switch back are for the few games that won't work, or, when i am at work.
