Adding more memory.

I bought a Lenovo Y520T 25ICZ about a year ago. A couple of days ago I saw that I only had 48GB of available storage left. Therefore, I decided it was time to get a new harddrive. Like the novice I am, I didn’t dare do anything without Googling a lot first. And from what I learned, my motherboard only has two sata ports, who are both in use, I think. Please correct me if am wrong on this. The motherboard is a Y520T MB FRU Z370 WIN DPK. From what I understand, the existing drives in the computer is a 3.5 and a m2. So from what I currently think I know, I have to upgrade the motherboard to add a new harddrive. According to lenovos support center thing. There are no motherboard substitutes for this computer. So from whit I understand, I need to buy a new drive, new case and a new motherboard to get more memory?

if this is the case, does anyone have any suggestions for a good case and motherboard on budget?
The existing specs that I don’t want to replace unless I must is;
 

-          I7 8700

-          16gb ddr4 I think

-          Gtx 1060.

Everything else can be replaced if needs be.

Not seeing an M.2 connector, just 2 SATA ports...

If so, you can add another HDD or SSD easily.

You have one SATA port still available. Make good use of it since you won't have more after that for more drives so buy a capacity to grow into.

 

As for buying a new bigger board that won't happen. The motherboard is proprietary and so is the chassis. You can talk to Lenovo about it but I seriously doubt they'll have anything for you.

 

@jstudrawa I Google imaged it. The M.2 slot is on the very far left edge of the board.

I see it now, tucked in there, #12.

 

How about what's currently in the machine?  Do you concur that listing I linked?  Looks like only comes with a 1TB HDD?

OP stated that they only have one HDD in it so that tells us how many drives we're working with. However looking at the chassis from that link we can see that OP is really limited in that there's no onboard video so the GPU is required which means a PCI_e HBA isn't even an option.

Looks like there is a DVD drive too, that'll use the other SATA port.

 

Looks like he's going to have to get an M.2 drive.  The manual shows it's keyed for NVMe not SATA slot but that may be a generic pic.

You're right, I missed that. He'll have to unplug it. USB CD players aren't all that costly.

 

He is already using the M.2 slot so that's not an option.

...I'm confused. He said he wants to get a 2nd HDD so I don't understand what you're getting at.

I'm saying that he CLAIMS to have a 3.5 and an M.2 installed.  Tho the link i found to his machine only shows it comes with a SINGLE 1TB HDD.

 

I am thinking he does not have an M.2 installed.

 

So as far as I can tell, he has a free M.2 slot to use currently.

 

I'm asking him to show us if he has 1 or 2 drives currently installed cuz I only can see 1 installed, unless I am missing something.

OH, that's what you we're getting at. That makes sense. I just took his word for it that he knew what was in it.

 

So let's say the M.2 slot is free. If I'm not mistaken SATA SSDs that are compatible with the M.2 slot should work in said slot. I just spotted a 2TB for $75 so depending on what OP needs that'd be a nice upgrade.

Just a quick random Google search that landed me on Newegg.

Today a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD can be had for ~$100 so 2TB SATA in the same form-factor doesn't surprise me.

Yep my bad the pictures in the listing were seriously misleading. A 2TB would be around $220 currently. Might as well go with NVMe it can cost actually less and is much much faster.

Thank you for all your replies. Am at work so i wont have the option to read everything before i get home. This computer comes with alot of different specs depending on the version. The one i have does not have a cd drive. IT has one 3,5 1TB HDD and one M.2 ssd. So from what i understand here there should be one sata port alvalible?

Yes, it should.  Hopefully you can take the side panel off and visually verify when you get home later.

Googled an image of a sata slot, and looked inside. i saw one port that looked like a sata. thank you for your help.
