Hi

I have been looking to put a device in place to resolve buffer bloat as now I have 2 kids with numerous connected devices now and I play a lot of PubG.

My current setup is: Fibre Router (Modem Only Mode)  -->> Netgear Orbi

Speed wise I have 200Mbps Down and 20 Mbps Up

I have an EdgeRouter Lite which I had previously removed and was looking to put it back in place to resolve BufferBloat with its QoS features but the throughput is limited to approx 60Mbps with SmartQueue enabled which isnt very good and I will possible upgrade to 350 Mbps Down and 35 Mbps Up.

Therefore I am on the hunt for a solution and I have found a couple and thought I might see what you guys think

Untangle on a Zotac CI327 - $380 plus License Costs for Untangle ($50 a year)

NetDuma R1 - $190

Netgear Managed Switch GS108Ev3 $32 or Nighthawk S8000 - $60

Obviously cost wise the switches seem the best option but as the Cable Router is in Modem Mode security is a concern as it would need to go into this configuration

Fibre Router (Modem Only Mode)  -->> S8000 Switch Port 1 -->> Netgear Orbi -->> Wireless Devices Only
                                                                                       Port 2 -->> Gaming PC 1

                                                                                       Port 3 -->> Gaming PC 2

I assume the S8000 has no port forwarding functionality, UPNP or security features as its not a router so the gaming PC's would be at risk and potentially get strict NAT's etc.

I guess I could reinstate the EdgeRoute Lite but then the network becomes even more complex and my SLA with the kids is very strict so downtime is frowned upon so like to keep things simple.

Can you let me know your thoughts please, even if its that I am making this more complex than it needs to be.

Cheers

David

If your Fibre Router is in modem only mode, then you still need a router right after it. A router allows you to share the 1 Public IP the ISP gives you, they dont give you more than one generally. Unless you pay, and even then most wont do it on residential connections.

Games dont require a lot of speed to play. Hosting a game is the real issue as you need to have ports forwarded in the router. AND each port can only be forwarded to one machine on the network. So if you forward port 45 to Machine A, Machine B cant have port 45 forwarded to it. So that being said, there really isnt no way to solve that NAT issue, as your going to have at least moderate NAT with ports forwarded at least for 1 machine, the other will most likely be on strict NAT.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

This is why I thought maybe the best option would to reinstate the Edge Router Lite and put the Orbi in AP Mode and go with the S8000 switch.

Then I would have everything I need for $30 - $60 to cure BufferBloat

Fibre Router (Modem Only Mode)  -->> EdgRouter Lite -->> S8000 Switch Port 1  -->> Netgear Orbi

                                                                                                S8000 Switch Port 2  -->> Gaming PC1

                                                                                                S8000 Switch Port 3  -->> Gaming PC2

Does this sound like a decent solution?
