Non-thunderbolt 3 peripheral setup

michieldvv

Hi guys

I am planning to upgrade my desk setup and had some questions. Now I just have an Acer VX5-591G-769T gaming laptop. The plan is to get another, lightweight 13 inch laptop like the xps 13 or a macbook and connect them to a thunderbolt hub with my keyboard and mouse, speakers and preferably 2 samsung 27 inch 2560x1440 space monitors. I think all this is possible with just one (maybe one more for the audio?) cables. The problem is that I really want to keep using my current laptop for the more heavier productivity/gaming applications and since it doesn't have thunderbolt 3 I don't know to which extent this will be possible. Apart from a usb c and a couple of usb a's it also has a hdmi port.

How can I do this the easiest way without just plugging in everything one by one when I'm using the older machine?

Thanks in advance

Michiel

Edit: Also, I'm sorry if this is under the wrong topic, I didn't know if it should be under monitors or peripherals.

There's nothing to take pictures of really, I haven't ordered anything yet so it's just the current laptop. I'll post a link to it in an edit.

Okay so you want to plug your keyboard, mouse, and hdmi/VGA/Display Port into the hub, but your old laptop doesn't have TB3? Np, get a TB3 to USB A or USB C adapter and plug it in to your laptop

Is it that easy? Will it be able to handle the data transfers?

I'm not sure, do you have Type A or Type C 3.0/3.1? That could work, but I'm not an expert at USB so idrk.

So I lose some speed, but it could handle 2 2560x1440 monitors, a keyboard, a mouse and audio?

TB3 has 40 gbps of speed USB type c 3.1 has 10gbps, so I dunno. I would ask @jerubedo, @LukeSavenije, or @trevb0t

tb3 supports displayport, so if you can find a doc that can fit it, it should work as far as i'm aware

3.1 gen 1? aka 3.2 gen 1 aka 3.0? or 3.1 gen 2 aka 3.2 gen 2 because usb can't think of a better naming?
