nvidia adaptive mode and frametime?

after experiencing some erratic frametime issues on ffxv and witcher 3, I decided to lower the settings to get a smoother gameplay. Sadly, 55fps was the maximum fps I could crank out while maintaining a fairly consistent frametime. Interestingly, yesterday, I was browsing in my nvidia control panel and I noticed that vsync option was off. So I changed it to adaptive and lo and behold, witcher 3 is now playing at consistent 75fps and a rock stable frametime. Can someone explain to me why this happened?

Did you enabled ingame Vsync?

Nope. Rivatuner just capped it at 75fps. Its on unlimited frames in the game.
